Talking Drum, a film set in Harlem, highlights djembe drummers of Marcus Garvey Park. It features Baba Khunle, a master drummer and elder with Parkinson's Disease. Baba is set on seeing his star student, Queen-Asia, a 5 year-old drummer, make it at high levels of competition with his eyes set on Amateur Night at Apollo. The film looks at the rapid changes occurring in Harlem and how an aging population attempts to pass on cultural traditions to the next generation, while holding on to a vision of Harlem that is quickly fading.
The film premiered at the 2011 Citivisions Film Festival and won the award for Best Documentary Editing.
Stay tuned for future exhibitions.
