I shot a photo roughly every two miles between take-off in San Francisco and landing in Paris CDG to make this airplane time lapse.

Big thanks to the folks at uxlondon.com for inviting me to europe to speak - if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have made the trip. Shot with a 5d2, a time-lapse controller, and a 16mm - 35mm, mixed with some iPhone shots. The music is a modified template "Gain" used with permission from DETUNE ltd. denkitribe soundcloud.com/denkitribe/gain - I arranged on the Korg iMS20 iPad App. Edits and pans in After Effects CS5 and iMovie.

The photos during take-off and landing are all computer models and totally rendered because I would never use an electronic device when the FAA prohibits them. I did get lucky and have a whole row to myself to setup the tripod and gear.

Thanks to my neighbors for not minding an SLR click every 2 to 30 seconds for 11 hours, and thanks to the whole Air France flight crew for being insanely friendly and allowing me to shoot. Thanks to @ztaylor for showing me the Korg iMS20 iPad App. Thanks to @jayzombie and the #nerdbird on the way to SXSW this year for helping me come up with the idea. Thanks to @somnabulent for the idea of live scoring. Thanks to you for actually reading this far. You are a champion.

Haha was going to comment on that.... I don't know about the 5d2 but my D700 is loud! Awesome video!

The takeoff and landing rendered computer models are super amazingly realistic. I'd love to meet your modeler!
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
ha you know how modelers are these days, eddie. just so realistic.
  • tomcec 10 months ago
Nice timelapse. BUT, I highly doubt the takeoff and landing sequences are 3D renderings. To prove me wrong, post some wireframe renders.
  • Bill Voelker plus 10 months ago
Yup, I agree. Too realistic to be 3D rendering.
  • Nathan James 10 months ago
    Hahaha. You guys are silly.
Obviously, NO shooter would EVER break rules when shooting amazing video. Silly.

ok now that's creative. my mind is boggled though how you were able to keep it still - you say tripod, they allowed you this?

Hmm...could possibly be done on a space shuttle from San Fransisco to Paris (that is, if there were launching & landing pads for the shuttle in both locations). Ha ha!! :)

This is grrrreat!! How were you able to get the pictures to go fast enough in just imovie? It can only go .1 and you needed a lost faster than that to do this right?

Nice work, how many times did you change the batteries on this one?
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
Never - I have the grip with two batteries and I disable photo review so the LCD screen never lights up. That way I can shoot about 3k - 4k photos off two batteries fully charged.

Nice Beep, what's the name of the song?
  •
  • Nicole Young plus 10 months ago
Great timelapse, but FYI, you should really get permission to use copyrighted music for your videos. Like you said, it might be perfectly okay with the artist, but then again, it might not.
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
It's not actually a song that's potentially copyrighted - it's a template of synthesizer sounds included inside the new Korg synthesizer app, which I arranged using the app. They list the checkbox under copyright as blank on the info about this template, which I specifically sought out, and I contacted the artist of the template. I didn't use their arrangement at all, and this is a non-commercial project.

If ever there's a case where antiquated notions of copyright would stifle innovation, this is it. FYI, *you* should read "A History of Intellectual Piracy" by Adrian Johns, and listen to Lawrence Lessig.
  • Nicole Young plus 10 months ago
I guess, in the link you provided (soundcloud.com/denkitribe/gain) there's a very clear copyright notice ("(c)DETUNE ltd. All Rights Reserved"). You also mentioned that it's probably copyrighted in your description.

As a professional photographer who makes a living with my photography, I'd be pretty pissed if someone used my photographs without licensing them or asking for my permission.
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
This is a great opportunity for you to learn something, but you would have to actually read what I wrote, and realize I didn't use their song. I created a new arrangement. Your photo experience and fear have nothing to do with this. Good luck nicole you can do it!
  • Nicole Young plus 10 months ago
Well, I guess that they still sound similar, even though you did change it up with your own remix. I'd still feel the same way if it were a photograph being edited into a photo composition w/o my permission.

I guess we'll have to just agree to disagree. ;)
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
Nope, you're just wrong here. Copyright is seriously complex, and there are a lot of misunderstandings about it. Plus, Denkitribe just wrote and indicated the template is free to be used in any context. BAM:

I'm just going to sit and bask in the awesomeness that just happened here.
  • Chance Masterson 10 months ago
I was with you re: copyright Beep Show, until you posted the bit about Denktribe writing to you and telling you the template is free to use. If you thought you were within your rights per the existing language on your app, why did you ask them? Nicole made some basic accurate statements about copyright and facts. You come off pretty childish and undermine your argument with the Denktribe 'confirmation' Tweet bit. And yes, I'm the judge of these things.
  • Glenn Daniels Jr 9 months ago
lmao! "Nope, you're just wrong here"
  • Beep Show plus 9 months ago
Chance, thank god you are not the judge. Thank god for us all.

5,576 Miles in 1:40 (flight time) = 173,000 knots or roughly Mach 302.0, faster than a rocket, pretty cool!!!

Great video, out of curiosity I had to figure out the numbers above.

    nice timelapse.

  • Bastian Bade 10 months ago
    Wow awesome timelaps!

    One Question:
How you have changed the exposure time during the flight and during the shoots? Or is the exposure time set on a static value?
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
Thanks! I shoot these on Av (Aperture Priority) with an ISO ranging from 200 during the day to 6400 at night. That way the 5d2 will automatically go up to 30 seconds at night to as quick as 1/8000th when dawn comes.

Is your window facing south? How did you see the Northern lights? Great video!
  • Pierre-Paul Feyte 10 months ago
The window is effectively facing south during the night sequence, Virgo and Corvus constellations can be seen. Northern lights are also visible southward because the plane flying over Greenland is close enough to the pole to see them to the south respectively to his fly path.

How did you manage to set the timer 2 to 30 seconds? Did you change it, or does it happen randomly between 2 and 30 seconds?
  • Beep Show plus 10 months ago
I changed it - 2 seconds during the day, and up to 30 second exposures and intervals at night.
