22. Pass The Bucket with Tony Alva
Considered to be one of the the most influential skateboarders of all time, Tony Alva, an original Z-Boy, hit a bottom 4 years ago battling drug addiction and alcoholism.  There, at his lowest point, his reliance on successes and ego came into perspective for the first time.  Tony's fight for sobriety and truth has recently lead him to a new perspective on life and direction moving forward. Dedicated to giving back Tony now see's passing the bucket as the only way out.

the 'god' comment threw me off after his monologue highlighted finding peace from within. skateboarding is beyond religion.
  • Joel Gautraud 10 months ago
I find it amusing that people are so startled by the mention of 'god.' It's Tony's story, Tony's experience. He didn't say anything about religion.
  • Enn Doubleyou 10 months ago
...no one is disputing whether or not this is tony's story.
Personally, I find 'god' to be a fairly religious concept, although I can see how this is not true for everyone.
  • Patrick Alsobrook 10 months ago
I found it a bit disconcerting too after his lovely monologue that he has to attribute his new way of life to 'god' which happens to be a solely religious concept.

Oh Eliot. Eliot, Eliot, Eliot. Just when I've forgotten how to smile, ... there you are. Again, your work has such texture and depth, it's effect is so multi-leveled it's honestly difficult for me to express the different emotional impressions I get from your work.

But, I'll give it a try. I think what I love most is the entire piece put together is a whole, is one solid body. One part of it doesn't stand out from the other. It's just one impression with multiple affects to my heart, brain, and soul. Your eye has such mastery to it. Anyone can pick up a camera and shoot, but to invoke emotion, to inspire, to guide, to transform one's perspective as you do, is what this medium is all about.

Also what I love about this piece is you start out showing a man who has transformed. At first you have this impression of who he is by how he looks. And then you take us into this mans heart and he evolves not only into something that is inspiring, but into someone who is connected to us all.

    VERY well done! :-)

    Cheers!

I feel I'll be watching this every morning for inspiration for maybe the rest of my life. Tony Alva is becoming my third hero, other then my Dad and Kelly Slater. Eliot, your way of storytelling is amazing and inspires me to be a better filmmaker. Tony is so raw and real, it's incredible. Thankyou for this. Shred on.

Love this video! God is not about religion he's about relationship!

On the technical side I find the overly orange skin tones is some shots too much as well as the vignetting.

Set toughs canons to shoot flat!

¿Por qué solo muestran Latinos y Afro-americanos cuando hablan de clases bajas, de las drogas y las pandillas?

Why when mentioning low class people and talking of drugs and gangs they show only Latino and African American people...?
  • Lukas Korver plus 10 months ago
This is a valid concern. It should be noted that the location of the shoot happened to be in a neighborhood that is nearly 100% non-white. You should check out the next video in the Van's series, featuring Dennis Martinez which also deals with drugs and crime. offthewall.tv/video/pass_the_bucket_with_dennis_martinez#Embed

Awesome vid. The message is really positive just the bad language in the beginning that wasn't necessary (coz that's not positive). Jasper, dude that wasn't Bible bashing at all, but it is cool that even though they didn't mention the Bible once you can notice that only the Living Bible can bring such a real/true positive change in a person. Stoked! vimeo.com/18875702
