It used to be a lot easier to eat a well balanced diet. All we needed to do was eat a variety of complex carbohydrates, fats, proteins from lean meats, fresh fruits and veggies. In our fast, paced-busy lives today, we are not eating a balanced diet and even if we did, we aren’t getting the nutrients that we need.
One reason we are not getting the nutrients we need is, we are eating too many packaged, processed foods. These foods have had the nutrients like vitamins, minerals and micronutients stripped out. Chemicals have been added like preservatives to extend shelf life. These processed foods are also very high in simple carbohydrates and salt. They are cheap, easy and bottom line, you get what you pay for, empty calories with no nutrition.
Another reason we are not getting the nutrients we need is our fresh food is less nutritious today. Mineral depletion is common due to industrial over farming. They use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers do not supplement our foods. Fertilizers only replace 3 key minerals, potassium, phosphorous, and nitrogen but leave out other trace minerals like chromium that may play a key role in avoiding diabetes and high cholesterol for example.
It’s a vicious cycle. We are eating too many empty calories because our bodies are craving what is missing in our diets. The lack of nutrients in our food leads to cravings, bad health and disease. When you lack nutrients, your body craves more, you eat, you gain weight.
How do you break this cycle? Eat more nutrient dense foods. Foods that are lower in calories but packed with nutrients.
What are nutrient dense foods? The most nutrient dense foods on the planet are super foods. They have high concentrations of multiple nutrients that can help fight aging and promote wellness. Examples, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, acai berry, goji berry, camu-camu.
There are various types of superfoods:
Red/Blue superfoods protect the body from free radicals, prevent cellular damage, help prevent chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease. Examples are acai berries, acerola cherry, bilberry, blueberries, camu-camu, goji berry, pomegranate.
Green superfoods contain phytonutrient plant based compounds. They strengthens the immune system, slow aging, detoxify the body and alkalize the body. An acidic environment in the body can lead to disease. Examples are yacon root, bifiobacteria, lactobacillus, amylase, bromelain, cellulose, lactase, lipase, papin, protease.
Adaptogen herbs are also superfoods that grow in harsh climates. They strengthen the immune system, help the body cope with environmental stress, increase energy, helps you focus, and promotes calmness. Examples are astragalus, ashwagandha, cordyceps, ginko leaf, holy basil leaf, maca root, maitake mushroom, reishi mushroom, schizandra, suma root.
So, how do you get all these superfoods into your diet? It’s not easy with our crazy lives. I would try to add them slowly. But, I would be wise. You can’t just buy any blueberries or raspberries. You need to know they were grown at an organic farm and be sure they are using fertilizers that supplement the minerals we need. Don’t just grab any bottle off the shelf of your local store. Know where did the ingredients came from.
OK.. so here is where I suggest something I have a vested interest in.. You can stop watching the video or stop reading the article now.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of time and money shopping for organic fruits, searching high and low in your local health food store and on the net for each ingredient, you could make it easy on yourself and just try Shakeology which has over 30 superfoods. I drink it, I love it. I’m a fitness professional and would not stand behind it if I didn’t believe in it.
