entirely independent and unpaid - also with no budget. just a project i was curious about that became something of an obsession over the course of the winter...

Not to be a dick but switchback really did it first like 3 months ago..
  • Blake Whitman staff 10 months ago
yep, that one is cool too.
  • George Nimeh plus 10 months ago
The thing is ... yes ... the Wistler vid is cool, but it's mostly groomers .... This one has a ton of really good riding ... and the music is 1000 times better. Just because it was first doesn't make it better.
  • Willie Fields plus 4 months ago
Switchback may have done it first, Tristan did it better, by far.

  • Alena 'Ash' Heath plus 10 months ago
Wowwowwow. Makes me miss the home and the Rockies (even if mine are in Colorado...) Wonderful job, this video is awesome and Pretty Lights mixing Pink Floyd is fitting (I'm chuckling at all the old folks commenting above @ how they couldn't handle the music 'skipping around')

What did you shoot this with?? How did you get such high shots, were you in a helicopter at points?
  • Tristan Greszko plus 10 months ago
Mostly shot with a 7D, with some of the non-action on a 5D mkII. Had my feet on the ground for most everything, except for a few from inside the tram and two or three others from on top of tram tower 1 near the base.
  • Alena 'Ash' Heath plus 10 months ago
Fantastic...love both of those cameras, saving up for a 5D myself. I saw your answer below about lenses, and now I'm curious how your shots are all so smooth-did you just shoot them still on a tripod and pan in post? I think it's the shots from the lift that are blowing my mind the most, do you use any sort of rig in particular?
  • Tristan Greszko plus 10 months ago
almost every sequence is stabilized in after effects - the shots from inside the tram took a while to get smooth (and still aren't as smooth as i'd like) since the whole scene is moving and panning, plus shaky hands in a crowded 100 person tram car.
  •
  • Danny Holland 10 months ago

  • Brad Sherman 10 months ago
    Incredible.

I am going to start building a miniature mountain in my basement tonight.

I only have 20 miniature people right now but some wine, some dim lights, and some Marvin Gaye and I'll have more in nine short months.

It does take nine months for miniature people, right?

  • Paul Lovelady plus 10 months ago
Just made my Monday! Thanks for the inspiration, Tristan!
What lenses did you use for this? Do any depth of field blurring in post?
    Phenomenal...
  • Tristan Greszko plus 10 months ago
i originally wanted to shoot it entirely with t-s lenses, but it just isn't practical in the mountains, so the blurring is all done in post... most shots are with the 70-200 f/4L, but there are some 17-40 f4/L shots in there and one or two 50 f/1.4s too, all canon. glad you're psyched on it!
  • KäntrastMedia plus 10 months ago
So you did not actually use TS Lenses. What did you use to get this TS look?
  •
  • Anthony Sahdev 10 months ago
It's good by why use so poor music that doesn't work with the piece!

Jeff T, Tristan isn't a copying W/B...besides for all the glory that is Whister in summer...Jackson is in spades during winter...not that we aren't the closest thing to the African Serengeti in the summer too. What you're watching is some of the most coveted lines packed into 5 minutes, enjoi ;-). Besides, If I lived in Whistler I'd spend my days dreaming of Pembi, Fernie or Rogers... bummer it isn't summer!

Great! Did you use tilt-shift lenses (if so, which?) or process the look in post?
  • Tristan Greszko plus 10 months ago
All in post - it's a long/semi-boring process to describe, but I used Alien Skin Bokeh 2 and processed all frames in Photoshop before moving to After Effects for stabilization.

Absolutely great. But I echo a few previous comments. The sound on the Pink Floyd breaks up especially on the higher level passages. Unlistenable.

The video was amazing to watch but I would highly suggest not using video copilot stuff. I mean use techniques but don't replicate exactly what he did. Just stick with basic text animations/looks if you can't come up with anything that isn't a plain copy.

    But besides that so enjoyable.

wow. very inspirational, thanks. love the remix of Time too. I also think it is a great song for a ski movie, and I used the original version to open the very first ski film I made, but I kept getting hung up with poor quality issues. J Hole is one of my favorite mountains though and this really highlights how great it is.
