Artist: Larry Sanchez
The Rocketdyne Mural was painted by Rocketdyne employee, Larry Sanchez, in the heyday of the space race in 1963. The Rocketdyne plant in Neosho was heavily involved in building engines for rockets that carried America’s hopes into space and eventually put men on the moon. During this time, Sanchez was asked to paint a mural and he chose to create his view of what the future would look like in outer space. The objects he put in his vast look at space are remarkably similar to the satellites and space stations of today. The mural is located in the company’s cafeteria and employees were able to watch Sanchez as he worked. The plant is now home to Premier Turbines, a company which does large aviation engine overhaul work. Two years later Sanchez won a contest to design the Big Spring Park Tile mural.
