Chris Garden and his team built a device that inputs Bisphenol A (BPA) and the output is GFP and two genes that degrade BPA. The team used an estrogen receptor to optimized for expression in E. coli as the sensor in their device because BPA has been shown to mimic estrogen and can bind to estrogen receptors.

The team was awarded a Bronze Medal at the iGEM 08 Jamboree.
