Three friends and I made the pilgrimage this year to Thompson Pass, Alaska, in the Chugach Mountains near Valdez. An event called Tailgate Alaska allowed a good introduction to these intense mountains. Alaska is having a really low snow year this year, and their snowpack right now is reminiscent of their early season. This is our first big tour there, working with what would be the best light of the trip. We roped up and started the bootpack up Berlin Wall, but some weather moved in and we ended up descending from halfway up the wall, for a total of 3,000ft back to the road.
