Iceland. Land of contrasts: Hot water and Ice, situated in the North Atlantic, right above the mid-ocean ridge that separates America and Europe.

Shooting was done in two stays (2 weeks each) in 2005 & 2006 (both in September) with a result of 15 hours of footage.

Camera was a SONY Z1. I used some COKIN semi-grey Filters extensivley to get the sky as dark as I wanted it to be. Almost not color correction was done in the post, but the timelapse and slo-mo.

Beautiful. In the late 1960s when I was young, my Bohemian parents went on a 3-week safari by bus all around Iceland. I still remember them telling me that that the tour driver's name was Gudmundar Jonasson. I've always wanted to go there. Thanks for your art.

    Very very beautiful images!

I would have loved to hear the sound of the falling water or of the vapor coming out of the land, etc., and specially the scene at 04:36, how does it sound like?

It is a shame that you killed all those sounds...
  • Eva Sturm 1 year ago
The sound in the footage is awful, believe me. Just like terrible noise. I think you have to do some sound design in order to emulate the impression of these giant waterfalls and bubbling mud holes. But then you may take the risk, that it become somewhat unreal, unless you have experienced it yourself.

Folks! I am overwhelmed by this mass of friendly and positive feedback! Here a first attempt to answer all your questions:

The shots were done in 4 weeks 2005 & 2006 (both in September). All in all I took 15 hours of footage. Camera was a SONY Z1. I used some COKIN semi-grey Filter in a lot of shots to get the sky as dark as I wanted it to be. Almost not color correction was done in the post.

I did not visit the blue lagoon, but enjoyed a bath at Landmannalaugar.

The song is also used in "Life Aquatic" by Wes Anderson.

Thanks again for watching the clip, glad you like it.

    Cheers, Eva

I believe James ment Akureyri? what is the city in the north of iceland, in one of the longest fjords in the country and is surrounded by mountains, second biggest city.
You can get there when you pass this bubbling mud on orange land and then big lake with a lot of vulcanic islands.. sounds like in fairy tale when you go to rescue the princess :)
  • Eva Sturm 11 months ago
Yeah, I guessed it might have been Akureyri, which is a very nice town.

    Amazing!

I have a question about the cokin filters:
Do these darken the entire shot, or only the sky/brighter areas? If the latter, how does it work? Is it a gradient?
  • Eva Sturm 11 months ago
Yes, it is a gradient. So you can darken the sky to a certain amount.
  • Steve V 11 months ago
Cool, well it works great, thanks!

  • Jym Davis 11 months ago
Were you shooting for a specific project?
  • Eva Sturm 11 months ago
It is still my own project. I was close to sell it, but it failed. So I decided to produce this short. My idea is to bring in some aspects of the ancient times in Iceland, myths, stories etc. and the rough geological history. And maybe now it's also time to bring in the latest events on that island ...
  • Jym Davis 11 months ago
Nice. I could definitely see it being the backdrop for some kind of short film. That is why I asked. I kind of took that approach when I found some amazing land in mountains of North Carolina. It is more abstract without a lot of direct links to the place but it seemed to kind of fit. Made with a video collective I work with:
