This video is sent us by the company for promotion of their show in Bergen the 15. and 16. of April 2011. Excerpt from the program:
Do magic and feminism go together? Anne Juren, the French choreographer living in Vienna, and Annie Dorsen, the New York based director, attempt to prove that it can: it’s alchemical, it’s political and it works. Expanding on Juren’s solo Magical, they have created a feature-length version, together with magician Steve Cuiffo. The subversive potential of the illusionary trick and the reference to artists like Carolee Schneemann and Marina Abramović underline the intention to ironically but effectively irritate and spectacularly blind the look that consumes the female body.
“For that early version of the work, [Juren] went in search of the relationship between choreography and magic. She cooperated with the french magician Loic Laszlo with whom she developed magic tricks with her vagina” (Lisa Schmidt)
“It seems to me that putting these historical feminist practices into the context of a magic show is a really amazing move” (Annie Dorsen)
