The WVIL camera is a concept camera envisioned by Artefact's award-winning design team. It answers the question: “what’s next for camera design?”

The patent-pending WVIL system takes the connectivity and application platform capabilities of today's smart phones and wirelessly connects them with interchangeable full SLR-quality optics.

    Brilliant.

I see something like this also working with an iPhone, where you just have a remote lens that speaks to the iPhone and all the software runs on the iPhone itself.

Those are neat, but it's still an attached lens to the camera (the iPhone) like any other camera.

Sick concept. I can see this using an iPod / iPad as the screen though. I highly doubt people will be interested in another device in the long run. Oh, and the Facebook integration in a higher end device... eh.

The design is great, but I can't really think of any situation in which you would need to have a lens in a different location than the rest of the body.

Specific angles, maybe, but at the same time, the body on this camera is small enough where it wouldn't obscure many special shots unless they demanded this type of setup and this type of setup only. It would be interesting to see what other applications the designers have in mind besides just this example.

Hate to be a "hater" but when she takes the lens apart from the body (around 13-14sec) you can see the lens cap on the back, and just on the next shot you can see the lens without it.

It´s an attractive idea but i think not that functional. If you want tethering you can do it with some eye-fi cards or some DSLRs... Well it´s a nice video.

    ; )

Wow it looks very cool !!! Great idea and good job !!!
  •
  • Zeger 10 months ago
I agree with @Darcy Fitzpatrick, if you're going to do this, what is the point of another screen + interface with batteries and all that? Just make a WIFI-lensmount that can also attach to your smartphone. You'd only need to make a brutal app.
Still, for the few times you make a selfportrait, this solution seems a little far-fetched.

I like the video/presentation though, awesome.

This is Olen from Artefact (a designer who worked on Camera Futura). It is currently only a concept, but we are exploring several production options...
