Once completely depleted of its penguin and seal population by early 19th century sealers and whalers this distant sub-antarctic island has made a striking recovery, now boasting thousands upon thousands of penguins. The island is unique in that it is literally a piece of the ancient marine seabed that has uplifted out of the ocean to become a safe haven for wildlife from the settlement of man.
