When construction crews unearthed large deposits of the mineral pyrite during construction of Interstate-99 in Central Pennsylvania, the discovery set back completion of the road several years and inflated the cost by millions of dollars. The personal and emotional cost felt even greater to residents of the area, who saw well water go bad and the value of their homes plunge.
