Creating a live drawing from the video projection of these spacious and embellished interior landscapes becomes an artifact-- a sketch rendering of a place where staying within the boundaries of the architecture, paintings, and furniture is what we are supposed to do. I quietly follow the rules, only at times straying from where I am supposed to draw. A subtle, respectful resistance. When we are young we are taught to draw within the black lines of our coloring books. As an adult, we risk becoming marginal if we leave the designated spaces, and if we challenge the constructs set up for us.
In this collaboration, we are trying to explore the overlap between drawing and sound. The sound is meant to be improvisational as a reaction to the performance of drawing, and the creation of an artifact from the video projection. Unlike the mark making, the sound is an outlet to explore outside of the structured lines. The sound becomes an escape from the rigidity of tracing what is in the projected space. Potentially, the sound is the element needed in order to challenge the rules of staying within the lines.
