Haselwurm is a short fantasy/horror inspired by a side to some mythical stories
of the region of Trentino, Italy, on the other the narrative of Howard Philip Lovecraft. The main
characters are a woman and a man in search of solving a mystery as old as the mountains of the
story; the recklessness of a rifle shot, and make the mistake of killing a creature unlike any
other. The consequences of this reckless act will soon be known and the price will be high ...
PRODUCTION
Haselwurm production began in early 2010,with the intention to make something that paid homage to monster movies and that was a bit different from what we have seen in Italy in recent years.
After some experiments in animation and experimental short films, Eugenio Villani decided to produce and direct a short film easier in terms of plot but more elaborate in photography and special effects; so he asked David Chance Fragale to deal with the script and the concept of make-ups and creatures. The next step was to move the crew to the
Trentino region, taking advantage of the atmosphere and scenery of the place. After a troubled production, hampered by sudden weather changes and tight deadlines, Haselwurm shooting was completed in two sessions a week each.
In late summer of 2010 the short was edited and the post-production begun. Visual effects were created in record time and the video was finished in early 2011.
The purpose of the video is to raise awareness of the recovery of Italian genere cinema, abandoned many years ago, without renouncing to a touch of experimentation and
trying to enhance the legends of the area we live in; legends that are being forgotten little by little. Moreover, Haselwurm means to pay homage to those foreign authors of supernatural stories who have always had a large following in Italy, such as H. P. Lovecraft, W. H. Hodgson and Arthur Machen.
The result is something that resembles the end of a longer movie, with the resolution of the fate of the protagonists, but without the whole narration of what happens before. A story that maybe will be told in the future, if ever. Haselwurm is indeed the first step towards the creation of a strong team that can continue to work in short films or even longer stories with fantastic theme.
