In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the northeastern border region of Italy, it is possible to cross an international border simply walking through a small river that separates Italy from Slovenia. Not many years ago this small river was part of the Iron Curtain and more recently was used by illegal immigrants to enter Italy and the "Fortress Europe".
