Sitting or lying on the sidewalk is now illegal in San Francisco between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Oops, but there's nowhere else to sit. The city has the smallest population of public benches per capita of anywhere I've ever seen. So what, go inside? Oops, but for a lot of folks, there's nowhere to go inside. San Francisco is undergoing intense gentrification; less and less affordable housing. Less and less jobs to work to try and afford the housing. If you don't have a job or can't work a regular one for some reason like not being a citizen, you can wait on the side of the road for someone to drive by who needs a worker. Oops, but don't sit down to take a break before your long work day. You might get picked up by the wrong kind of drive-by.
Thankfully, there are now a handful more benches in San Francisco. They magically grew up out of the concrete last night. They look organic to me. I think it's fine. Go ahead, have a seat. They don't bite.
But the cops do.
