A short video, inspired by the song "Goodnight Moon" by Shivaree. All pictures were taken with my Canon G9 Powershot. Only stills were used.

I used blender for the 3D effects.

dude this video rocks the socks off my feet
this video inspires me to be a film editor of this capacity some day we should all look at this video as a pioneer in the industry of turning shivarees music and matching it to our own liking.
    wahooo I want more!!!!

This music video/animation/stills-audio is simply the greatest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I think it could be argued that this may be one of the most beautiful things to ever exist, in the history of time. Dinosaurs? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Flowers? No. Goodnight Moon by Dan Finlayson (also Shivaree).

How in the world do you do the perspective moving around buildings?... that's really cool
  • Dan Finlayson plus 3 years ago
I used a technique called "Camera Mapping" and the software program Blender. It involves building 3d models of the the subject matter and then projecting the photo onto the faces of the geometry.

great video dan i really liked it. I especially enjoyed the part when u clipped all the different tv shows together. i noticed conan obrien and Jackson from NFL COUNTDOWN!!! i also enjoyed the part where u had a view of the city and like zoomed in (at 1:36). Great job!

I'm just curious. All of your other videos (and all other Vimeo videos) work for me, but this one says it no longer exists. Did you remove it? I'm really interesting in watching it. All you other stuff is so thought provoking I can't wait to see it!
  • Dan Finlayson plus 3 years ago
    Thanks!

Try checking again, I think vimeo might have had a server issue. You should be able to see it now.

Dangit. I have to do a project real soon along the same lines for school. I was hoping to use Camera tracking. It's not really working out. maybe camera mapping is a better choice, but I would argue it's a lot more work :(
  • Dan Finlayson plus 3 years ago
Camera tracking as in Match-moving? Here's a few tips:
De-interlace your footage, shoot progressive if possible
I find Syntheyes to be the most effective tracker

Camera mapping can take a long time. Just keep in mind that when you model the objects in the shot, they only need to be approximations.

I rewatched Colin Levy's tutorial today. I think your work really is rather brilliant, and frankly I'm a little jealous. I'll let you know if I take the idea and run with it. It conflicts with my current plan, but the motion definitely comes out smoother! I mean... wow.

Well, I am wondering: how did you make still images look like a movie? Like when you fly a short ways looking at the cityscape or look under the bed - how do you "bend" or "stretch" the image to make it look similar to a video? Good job on that, as well as the blur effects, etc, and making certain still images look quite dynamic! Did you cut out parts of the image (leaving alpha transparency) and apply those images to planes at different distances, so that when you move forward it simulates a 3D environment? :) Cool.
  • Dan Finlayson plus 3 years ago
Thats essentially what I did, but I took it one step further: I made rough models of the elements in the images and projected the color information on to them. That's what makes it look so much like video (especially on the bed shot)

Thanks for the info! So were you using the UV Project modifier or something else? What programs did you use to create this besides Blender? (The GIMP, maybe?) Did you use Blender's VSE to edit the video too?
  • Dan Finlayson plus 3 years ago
I used the "sticky" input method for the UV coordinates and the "make sticky" command in the object panel. I used Photoshop on some of the shots to separate foreground and background objects (and I did use the GIMP on one shot). To edit the video, I used Final Cut.

  • artislight 3 years ago
Ah, OK, thanks! I will have to learn about using "sticky" etc. I don't want to bug you with more questions if I should research it myself.

Alright, PS and GIMP are cool. ;)

Alright, Final Cut is cool... haven't tried it myself, tho. ;) Currently trying to use BlenderAVC for my stuff. ;)

but if you feel like answering more questions, please give me a link to where I can learn about using "sticky" input method for UV, etc., so I can learn how to do it. Thanks!

    To the curious ones
    peerlessproductions.com/tuts.html See "Camera Mapping".

Here's a great explaination of the process by my favourite speaking voice in the whole world: Alex Lyndsay

Great! could you do a mini video tutorial on camera mapping ?
  • Dan Finlayson plus 3 years ago
Possibly sometime in the future. Right now I'm very busy with another production, but by the holidays I should have some time to put something together.

hi dan. the effect stuff came out great. 3D as well as simply putting slow shutter speed photos back to back. all that stuff is really exciting.
But you're needle drawing skills trump all the rest! what a gorgeous needle in a doorway... :)
    hope you're well.

haha thanks! I'm doing great, having a very busy summer! I'm working on a music video at the moment. How's life after college?
