I always say this is one of the best ideas I ever had. Caitlin was the brilliant producer who found our two main sources. The three of us collected the footage over the span of two weekends, traveling from DC to NYC. At the time NPR seemed to be struggling to figure out how to integrate video with radio pieces online and as a result this video was rather undervalued. A quandary was in the air. One well respected veteran journalist there expressed it to me this way, "I didn't get into radio to do video." It makes a lot of sense. Still, I believe as radio becomes the internet, video is in the cards. It is more a question of resources and efficient design. Nevertheless, I am truly grateful that they published the piece at all. Eulogy for the Boombox was posted on the NPR Music site together with a nice audio & written piece by Frannie. It all made for a nice slice of Americana. Looks like up to now, with both Youtube and NPR hits, the video has quietly garnered something close to 100,000 views! Not bad. The people who see it seem to dig it a lot. And to my amazement, it has inspired other boombox stories. But man! What we could have done with a budget.
BTW: If you are a graphic designer, illustrator, or motion graphics person and think you might like to work together in the future, please let me know. I'd love to hear from you.
