In September 2008 my mother, Claire Weinberg Welch, returned to her home town of Brake, Germany. While it might not seem a big deal to return to your home town, in Claire’s case it was. In February 1939 at the age of 4, Claire and her family, which included her Jewish father and grandfather, left Germany for a new life in the United States of America. Claire’s return to Brake was exciting for her, but she soon discovered that the people of Brake were excited to have her come back. It is very unusual for someone who left Germany under the same circumstances that Claire and her family did to return. The people of Brake were interested in her and her family’s story. A press conference was held at the end of their visit. What follows is the third part of that press conference.
