The Sachsenhausen concentration camp was the principal Nazi camp for the Berlin area. During the nationwide Kristallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass") pogrom of November 9 - 10, 1938 Berthold Weinberg, the father of Claire Weinberg Welch, was taken from his home and sent to Sachsenhausen. He was released on December 14, 1938 with the understanding that the family would leave Germany and never return. The Weinberg family had already been preparing to emigrate to Chicago where other family members were living. They left Germany on February 14, 1939. In September 2008 Claire returned to her hometown of Brake, Germany. This trip to Sachsenhausen was part of that journey home.
