During a production meeting where someone said "we need to sell more Virginia Tech branded license plates" is where this crazy concept originated. A spoof of MTV's hit show "Pimp My Ride", this spot takes ridicules to the next level.
First off, celebrity sports announcer Bill Roth, better known as the "voice of the Hokies", shows up to a garage in a beater. I'm talking 1990's Geo Metro with tri-coat paint job, muffler falling off, the real deal here. If you have ever seen Bill around town you probably noticed he drives a Mercedes or something similar. So Bill shows up in this beater and tosses his keys to the HokieBird and asks him to "pimp my ride". So the HokieBird disappears into the garage and starts working.
A few hours, days, weeks, who knows how long later, the Hokiebird reappears with Bills "ride". He didn't just pimp it, he turned it into a 1960's era Rolls Royce classic. Complete with new Virginia Tech branded tags.
Ok, so the spot is pretty silly, but then again so is a six foot turkey. And if your trying to sell license plate to a group of folks that go nuts when that turkey shows up and struts around, well silly doesn't really matter any more. And if you look at it that way it's actually kind of funny.
