Gairuzazmi Ghani is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics, International Islamic University Malaysia and the associate editor of IIUM Journal of Economics and Management. He received his B.S. in Finance, M.A. in Economics and Ph.D. in Political Economy and Public Policy from University of Southern California. His research interests are in the areas of international trade and development especially of Muslim countries, and in complexity economics.
When asked why he joined the Building Global Democracy Programme and what her aspirations for the programme were, he replied:
"The Building Global Democracy Programme Project on Islamic Finance is interesting because it provides an opportunity to study how an idealistic view of Islamic finance flourished and become a reality. Surely, the reality has not been able to abide by the ideal. The reality maybe weakly Islamic, but at least it has helped those who have shunned the financial market entirely, to enter the modern financial system. "
