It's weird how nobody taught anybody this game, but SO many kids play it! My mom would come downstairs in her galoshes (lava-boots) and scoop us up for dinner.
I used to play this too when I was a kid during recess! So fun. But we called it 'lava-monster' because there was always someone who was 'it' and tried to pull you into the lava. Why did I ever stop playing?
Oh man! My brother and I were even weirder when we were little. We would play "The floor is King Tut bones." I think we did it because of this huge book my mom had on King Tut. We also had a rule that if you really had to touch the King Tut bones, you could get your life back by eating a piece of raw Spaghetti. So like, we'd carry 3 or so pieces with us and when the spaghetti ran out, so did your life! So good.
I've played a version of this - except it's like musical chairs (twenty people to like 6 chairs) and when the music stops, your feet can't touch the ground (which turns to lava!).
HAHA what a hardcore part of every childs youth! My cousins and I would play this except we'd play you had to get from one side of the room to the other while avoiding getting tagged by other people, who had to remain stationary. So strategically when you weren't playing you would want to stand in a place that would cause the biggest obstacle. Also you could use the sofa cushions as floating rocks.
man.. who HASN'T played some version of the floor being lava lol. We used to play during algebra class in highschool. entire class sitting with their feet above the ground until somebody touched it and said FUCK I TOUCHED THE LAVA

this will be the next olympic sport, I am sure of it.
I'm expecting a flurry of The Floor Is Lava videos, and eventually, of course, The Floor Is Lava Channel. Can't wait.
