3. Apple iMac hard drive upgrade
Upgrading the internal hard drive in an aluminum Apple iMac computer.

The replacement hard drive is a Segate 1.5TB model.

Fitting the hard drive took around 30 minutes.

A full step by step description of the upgrade is on my blog at briandorey.com/post/Apple-iMac-hard-drive-upgrade.aspx

    Thank you very much Brian.

That was a terrific tutorial and a high quality video. Are those suction cup tools easy to come by?

You are a lifesaver. Thank you for the detailed procedure. I had to replace my drive and Apple wanted $500.00. I bought a 1TB drive for $107 and did it myself, thanks to your video. Again, I can't thank you enough.

    Perfect educational video, thanks.
I am thinking of upgrading the HDD with an SSD to gain some performance out of my mid 2007 iMac.

Thanks SO much for posting this... I was a bit scared to do this, but with your video it made it so easy.. at 1:48 Please remove the screws from the LCD connector and remove from the graphics card... I'm sure I didn't do this, because I couldn't find them.. maybe my aluminum mac is different??

Just a tip... I forgot to mark the 4 connectors, my fault.. i had to fiddle around with it for a bit until i got it to light the screen up correctly.. maybe it's just me, but i think it might be informative to notify users earlier on in that part of the video to keep that in mind... I guess i was just working as i saw the video I had pulled the connectors off before you said to mark them, lol

Many many thanks. I had to replace my hard drive because it stopped functioning (bad sectors). This took all the worry out of the process. My 8 year old son helped me disconnect the connectors. I was impressed that you could do it so easily single handed. He commented how fast you were with the unscrewing compared to me :) The benefit of fast forward...

Hi Brian,, What model iMac (Year) were you putting the HD into? My model is mid 2007, so I am not sure whether I can put in a 1.5 TB into mine. Thx

Thanks - this was one of the clearest explanations I've ever seen on just about any subject. A real service.

Nice video - a few questions though - 1. Where exactly on the new drive do you place the temperature sensor and 2. What temperature does your new drive run at? I replaced mine with a Seagate 1.5 T ST31500341AS and it seems to always be running at 49C (according to SeaTools). I think this is right at the upper limit, is this normal?

Thanks Brian. Installed 2TB Western Digital drive in my mid 2007 24" 2.8Ghz Extreme iMac last night. Worked perfectly. Excellent video, very clearly explained and really instills confidence in the viewer. That said, it's still a tricky procedure that required real care on the part of the owner attempting the upgrade. Given that the drive cost £80 and the additional tools around £15 it's a really cost effective upgrade. Recommended. Thanks again.

awesome video but the suction cups you use are SO unnecessary. could use 2 simple suction cups, the glass is not that heavy and it's only held in by small magnets.

Updated my 2008 imac with a new HDD last week and used your video step by step with no issues. Much thanks! Wouldn't have attempted it on my own without your video.
