You know I feel they are both good edits. It's great footage. However, to me there was not much difference between the two as I have compared them -I find they are relatively the same.
If I would have changed anything it would have been the pacing of the cuts, the rhythm. If you are set on this musical piece I think what would work better is to step up the pace-the rhythm of cutting. FAster edits. It would make more sense, especially when the singer begins to rap. Even fluctuating the rhythm, holding some shot a few seconds less and keeping some shots at this pace or slo-mo.
If you are set on this pacing then experiment with a different composition that works better with your existing edit. IMHO

    Hi MriaNYC,

Thanks so much for your feedback, I find it always good to share ideas and views via Vimeo. I understand the point you raised and how everyone can see the relationship between the music and the images. Here in Europe we tend to cut differently and observe a juxtaposition that often contrasts the pace of the rhythm but reflects the psychological essence of the visual image. So to sum up your view is not wrong but different, like our cultures which in this world of globalisation are becoming less defined.

    Best wishes

You know I have seen foreign films, even British ones, actually I've watched more foreign films than Americans - for what it's worth lol but thanks for reminding me that our sensibility in filming and cutting differs.
Although I don't think I can ever forget the wide differences in edits on international commercials I had to view for three years when working for a director.

I tend to agree with MariaNYC. The first 2 min. I have the sensation image and sound seem not to be connected. Just my opinion :) But great video Mark!

I've never been to SOHO, so your video was both educational and a pleasure to the eye. Strange that the music is in Spanish, I'd have expected something in English, but it fits the picture a lot.

Great, loved it. A few rather dark shots (but without lighting how do you get round that?) but great atmosphere and I think you've captured it very well and prefer this "director's cut" version. Music is quite perfect.
  • Londonmark Films 1 year ago
Thanks Greg for your comments and for always following my work don't forget the Londonmark Films group I added one of your shorts there hope you can join best wishes Mark.

Shooting in the Dark is 'Dark' but sometimes you can use gain on the camera to lift the image...As you know I never avoid low light conditions!
  • Greg Wallis 1 year ago
    Joined your group, looks good.

The trouble with gain is the damned noise it generates. Oh for a full lighting crew to follow me round... :)

Very clean work - enjoyed it a lot - even the music sounded lean clean and sharp. What an ecosystem Soho is... made me think of "Life of Pi".

    "Exactly, yes, I believe you..."

All diffrent walks of life... dynamically mingled in our community. It a beauty, simple beauty, when we don't judge from our own narrow mind. It become beauty, when we learn to let them be... let them practice at their time and allow them learn from their own mistake. To find their answers, How to go about this life with the others. Without infulence to change.
But we can share our experiences. Experience of our own life with the others.
All this was reminded me while I was watching your beautiful clip.
Thank you very much for your heart work turned in my simple joy to refresh my understanding with the others in this life. It was a beautiful.

Mr. Dawson, your films need no comment from me--they are superb in every way, from my point of view. Thank you for making them and posting them to vimeo. Were I in a position to hire you to make a film I've long had in mind, I would do so, but, alas.... So, I will simply give you my film idea and see if, perhaps, some day down the line, it appears on vimeo (or on the silver screen!). It is a simple idea (but certainly not simple to make!)--moving images of nature--opening scene: a drop of water driping ffrom a leaf somewhere in the jungle (we hear the drop), from which a simple melody begins--e.g., "The Seven Joys of Mary"--one drip becomes a stream of drips, the melody picks up tempo ever so so slowly, as the images now are of birds flying, fish swimming, spiders spinning webs, flowers opening in timelapse--slowly, slowly the world of Nature awakes to the melody, which now has become a bit more animated...you get the idea--but, then we are suddenly in the midst of a great metropolis--London, NY, Paris--and the tempo is set by the motion of people and vehicles--and the music and moving images are exactly timed in perfect synchrony! Tempo increase, as does the orchestration. Flash back to nature--red in tooth and claw--predator eats prey in violent chase/capture/feeding--music continues to swell and expand--flash back to urban landscapes or possibly of footage of disasters-manmade and natural--war, floods, building demolitions--a la "Koyanoquatsi", but with the difference being that instead of a world "out of balance" all the images are unified by the music, which builds to a crescendo, and then begins to diminish--images of family and lovers, children, Nature at its most beautiful, slowing down in a natural spiral of sound and images back to the first scene of a drop of water about to drip off a leaf in the jungle--and fade out to the sound of the drip. The theme is one of the inevitable interdependence of Nature and Man in every dimension and aspect, whether creative or destructive, and a celebration of this unity.
That's the film. Hope you make it! All best regards, H. Slovic

Regarding my last comment, please note that the suggestion to use "The Seven Joys of Mary" as musical accompaniment to a panoply of video images was not to suggest that there should be noticeable religious (of any denomination whatsoever) slant to the proposed film. It is just that that particular melody struck me as having potential for augmentation to a kind of joyous chorale that would suit the stated theme of a celebration of the interdependent unity of Nature and humans. No doubt there are many other "melodies" and musical pieces that would also suit, and a medley of such might be better suited to the various sections of the film.
