Overwhelmed with too many things to do...
...sometimes you just need to escape and get into your car and drive, even if you don't have a destination.

Just keep driving. You can't get lost because you aren't going anywhere.

On Saturday, November 15, 2008, I just kept driving.

beautiful- and I love the music. Who is it?

Also, what kind of tripod did you use? so smooth!
  • Music: "Ignorant Boy, Beautiful Girl" - Loney, Dear

I use a Davis & Sanford tripod, it kinda sucks to be honest, but for what I paid it's good enough. The knobs are in a really awkward place. However, it does have a fluid head so that is one plus :-)

    Thanks a lot Rebecca

  • Hahaha...You're too kind my dear friend. This is what I do, for easy replication:

    Grab camera.
    Get in car.
    Drive.
Stop at the side of the road.
    Spend time looking around.
    Breathe.
    Shoot some random stuff.
    Look out and enjoy.
    Get in car.
    Repeat.

Does anyone else get tired of Landscape shots and plants that go in and out of focus? hahahaa It is seriously every other video I see on here. They look amazing but are so unoriginal.
  • I'm not posting this to impress anyone. This is like a video journal. I am the least bit concerned if people enjoy or like what I post here, I post it for myself and to retain a memory.

I'm sorry that landscapes are unoriginal and lackluster for you, for me, I still enjoy them. And it's more about the moment that I experienced rather than the small iota of what is perceived in this video.

On that same note, I've seen hundreds and thousands of videos of clouds, but it doesn't make me like them any less.

I suggest you don't watch any of my other videos, you'll just find more "landscape shots and plants that go in and out of focus."
  • Russell Gallagher 1 year ago
Don't apologize, it is still a good video. I just had to say it lol. I just want to see a little more creativity is all. Your videos are good but they are also very repetitive, just like a lot of the videos on here. Didn't mean to come off as a dick. Sorry if I did.
  • It's fine, you're entitled to your own opinion, everyone is. That's the awesome thing about creating, it's so subjective.

That's the thing...you could have the same content...let's say..this lake that I shot. You could shoot it with your video camera, you could shoot it with your cellphone, you could take a million photos of it, you could rotoscope and animate it etc..that paired up with how you edit, and what piece of music or lack of music you decide to pair up with it...is what makes every single landscape video on vimeo different. And when it comes down to it...it is still a lake...but perceived through the eyes of different people.

When someone sees something that they want to shoot, how they edit it or present it gives it a different mood...so albeit hundreds and thousands of videos of plants and landscapes on vimeo, any one video could be special to the person who uploads it...and in that case, I'm glad there there's so many of them. And I can also bet that there are more videos on here than just those, maybe the ones you happen to stumble upon are, but Vimeo is a community filled with incredible talent and creativity, don't be dissuaded at the number of "landscape videos" you see.

There's more creativity on this website than anyone could possibly ever handle.

    :-)

My videos may be "very repetitive", but I try to experiment with different mediums and editing...so in that sense, the repetitiveness of my experimentation is apparent in my videos. No harsh feelings, Mr. Gallagher.
  • Russell Gallagher 1 year ago
I get that there are a lot of other videos on this site with some crazy stuff but there are a bunch more videos like these. It has gotten to the point where there is no special editing, its just nice images with soft music in the background. It is extremely predictable.
  • Haha. Yeah.

I've never watched any of your videos, nor do I know how involved of an editor you are...but let me just tell you this...

This video looks so simple and nothing "special" with the editing...but it surely took me over 6 hours to edit this video. There's no way my camera could ever capture the aesthetics that ends up in the final output of this video. It's a lot of precision in marking and color correction in order to attain the closest resemblance to what is actually perceived with my eyes during the moment.

Even picking a specific song is extremely intentional and how it interacts with any piece of video.

I don't even know if your statement was about this in particular, but I guess it's not that important.

Getting "nice images" is a lot harder than it seems...

And if a couple people "like" or "get" it...then something is more right than not.

But I think the bottom line is, if the video means enough to the person that they would upload it and share it with people they care about, let alone strangers, I'm pretty sure they don't care if their video doesn't have special editing or is extremely predictable.
  • Russell Gallagher 1 year ago
I know editing and some things are easy to edit and others not. But to be completely honest with you getting a nice image is very simple. You just need to have an eye for it. That's why photography is kind of a joke lol. Color correction takes time and it's worth it but I mean to each his/her own. =)
  • I stand by what I say:

Getting a nice image is not as easy at it seems, even if you "have an eye for it."

    Photography is not a joke.

Color Correction and being a Colorist is an art on its own.

    That is all.

    End.
  •
  • Russell Gallagher 1 year ago
hehe, I stand by what I say:

I know what it's like to get a nice image and I think it's easy.

    Photography is a joke.

    =)

  • erica hampton 1 year ago
May we see some of your nice, easily attained images please?:)
  • Russell Gallagher 1 year ago
=) Sure. I don't have a video yet... But I will within the next week but I have a few simple pictures that look nice but took really no effort.

    photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v347/11/8/748830198/n748830198_1872351_1671.jpg

Those are meh, I mean they could easily be better but that was with a regular digital camrea. Nothing special. Like I said photography is kind o a joke.
  • erica hampton 1 year ago
I would think that someone arguing that photography is a joke and that it's easy to obtain a nice image easily would have brought to the table something that wasn't "meh" and "could be better".........
  • Russell Gallagher 1 year ago
Yea I would too, but I honestly don't care. I think it simply and not hard to take a artsy/nice picture, at all. Simple as that. Asking me to post pictures it kind of silly seeing how we all look at things differently. For example you could hate a picture and I could love it. Photography is not difficult. There really is nothing more to say to that. You'd think you would have realized that it is just an opinion. I overestimated the intelligence of the people on this site. =p My bad.
  • Kindly stop posting comments on my video, Russel Gallagher. If you have more you need to say to me or anyone else, please just send me or them a message or open up a discussion post in the forum in regards to the "lack of intelligence of people on this site." Thank you.

    Awesome.

Making it so suggestive and dreamy, and yet make it appear so easy... Good eye, good ear - it's is a feast for the senses.

    Thank you, Karen!

I completely expected a car to appear in at least one of the roadside scenes. I also had to go back to see if there were any cars on the driving scenes. The answer was no!

    Lovely escape.
Like so many places nearby, but so far.
  • My car is camera shy, he doesn't like to be filmed, I have to respect his decision. haha.

Thanks for taking the time to watch this Rusty. :-)
  • Rusty Rogers 1 year ago
    I meant... any cars!
For a driving video it was a nice escape from cars.
    :~)
  • Actually, there were 2 cars...one in the wide shot of the pan left, but i cut it right before the car came in...and another one with the closeup of the grass sticking out of the rock by the side of the road, a car drove past in the background, but i cut it because it was distracting.

    lurkers!
    haha :-)
  •
  • amazing Karen, I am a great fan of your video's, which editing program do you use?

It was awesome though, hopefully you weren't drivin and recording for parts of it xD.
  • Driving is optional...you can go for a long walk or a long bike ride.

Hahaha. Yeah I don't like showing my face on camera so I guess we can stick to these colorful little shoes.
