New York City, NY (April 18, 2011) Next Level Pictures in association with Tstop Cinema teamed up with Abel Cine, Kessler Crane, Wide Open Camera, Angenieux, Carl Zeiss, Cooke, Tyler Mounts, and Miller to unveil the worlds first ever camera test using the Sony F3 with S-Log. S-Log isn’t scheduled for official release until late summer 2011 so we are proud to get our hands on the camera and put it through several latitude tests to include helicopter aerials by Vincent Laforet, vibrant Vegas city lights, and skin tone tests of two models in ten different locations throughout Las Vegas at NAB 2011. The crew of twelve had only ten hours with the camera to produce and film the entire project. The purpose of this test is to compare the latitude and image quality of the new S-Log firmware to native EX codec.

You guys have some amazing stuff in that test, and I was with you on the BTS until "its possible to do this kind of work with zero budget". A 13k camera, another 30 to 50k (or more) worth of lenses, who knows how much in all of your support gear, plus a helicopter rental does not equal out to "zero budget". I know all of these things were given or borrowed, but in the real world they wouldn't be.
  • Tyler Ginter plus 10 months ago
I understand your point but that is a very common misconception. It's all about who you know and who you surround yourself with. We had no budget to do any of this at first, we created it out of thin air in less than 10 hours based on connections that we have with other filmmakers and by working extremely hard! We didn't make excuses, we created opportunities. Filmmaking is changing drastically and you can do all this with no budget if you are driven by passion and surround yourself with amazing people. Keep working hard and opportunities will come, I promise you! It's no longer about having a budget or gear. It's about the people you surround yourself with. This was more than a camera test. We did this to prove that a group of people with no time or money could make something happen instead of making excuses of why it couldn't be done.
  • Stewart Schuster plus 10 months ago
Don't get me wrong, I respect what you guys do. You obviously have a wealth of talent and connections that you're drawing from. And I understand how the test came together for "free". All I'm saying is, if companies came up to you and said "We want a commercial that looks like that, but we don't have any money" or they don't have enough money to pay for the rental of the equipment, and pay for your time, that's a problem. You're in this business to, at minimum, put food on your table, and saying things like "it's possible to do this kind of work with zero budget" sends out the wrong signals to clients. Sony isn't going to hand every filmmaker a free F3. Kessler isn't in business to make free support gear. Zeiss isn't in business to give away lenses. That's all I'm trying to say is, there really isn't any such thing as "free". Even your time has a price tag to it. Where I work, we do a music show where artists come in, perform 4-5 songs and do an interview. Each one costs in the vicinity of 10-12k. A portion of that money pays for gear, a portion of it pays for locations/insurance/etc., but another portion of it pays for people. People with knowledge and skills. I'm sure you know this, because you and your crew obviously fit in to this category. But you don't work for free. Even if you did get all of the equipment for free, every time, you still have to eat, you still have to pay your bills. It's great that all of you could come together at NAB and made this test. There's nothing like working with friends, doing stuff you love, and I'm glad I had the chance to see it. I'm just saying that you have a lot of expensive gear there, and without some seriously high level connections, you may have been able to do this, but it wouldn't have been for "free".
  • Andrew Swan 10 months ago
Personally, I would see the F3 as a good camera to get so that you can get the full benefits of (renting) higher-quality lenses as you need them, while still allowing you to do documentary/concert/etc. shooting with cheaper lenses today. Still, the real test is what this footage would look like projected on the big screen. Any upcoming screenings planned, guys?
  • Next Level Pictures plus 10 months ago
Stewart, I think you are missing the point. What Tyler means by "free" is that we brought all of our resources together, for a camera test, to push the industry in a forward direction. This was in no way about money, it was all about progression.

  • Salomon plus 10 months ago
A lot of the good stuff [if not the best stuff] comes from zero budget!
  • Stewart Schuster plus 10 months ago
Salomon - Everything has a budget. The camera that you used cost somebody something (if not you), the editing equipment, the lighting, the gadgets, the gas to get to and from a location. Someone's time, even if donated, was taken from something they would have been doing otherwise. They are doing you a favor, which you will probably be expected to pay back at some point. That's a cost, because its going to cost you your time (which has value) later on. If you and your buddy went out and shot something and you bought them lunch, that's part of your budget. Nothing is free. Nothing is "zero impact". It just doesn't exist, and its false to say that it does.

  • Serge Taveras 10 months ago
Amazing! But I think it's kind of a rip off to have features turned off and only activated if you pay Sony an additional $3000 for a firmware upgrade. Its obvious the camera was intended for S log but they just rather shut the features off and charge as demand gets more popular.

Why not just charge it at initial cost?

$3000 for an unlock is way too steep, I'll just invest that into a Scarlett whenever it comes out.

Great video. But I think with the release of the Epic-S and the Scarlet the F3 is still overpriced. Sony can only do 30 fps at full resolution 1080P. The Scarlet will do 3K at 120fps, and will shoot RAW for maybe less than $7,000, and will push colors close to 4:4:4. The Epic S will do 5K resolution at 120fps, does 4:4:4 and is cheaper than the F3. I considered the F3, but decided to hold out. With a $3,000 4:4:4 firmware upgrade and basic lens kit you've already spent about $25,000 on it. That's not the $13,000 price point Sony keeps advertising. I don't believe this camera will hold it's weight. Sony will be forced to drop their price or have a brick on their hands. I think Sony is trying to get what they can with all the delays at Red.

nice work and informative, i shot a TVC with an F3 in the week, inside and outside with a set of dimmable leds and a flek, its great camera and easy to use, shame about the limitation of the 35mm lens in the kit, it means you will have to buy another lens at least if you get the F3Kit version, and yeah im also on the fence with the later this year hopefully lol, release of the epic lol again, , i already own an xdcam so love the workflow but hey, 4.2.0 at 35mbps on the cards, they should have put this out higher bit rate at 4.2.2 on the cards at a minimum,, lets have a test on the new F65

I know you guys said you had about 10 hours to produce it and 10 hours to shoot it, did Sony disable it on your f3 after the shoot or did they loan you an f3 that had s-log already or was that 10 hours to work with all the equipment given by everyone to make this happen? Sorry if this is a weird question I really just wanted to know if you got to keep the firmware if it was on your camera. That would be pretty cool.

Hands down s-log on the f3 is impressive, the latitude is close to alexa and epic minus hdrx. However, the value proposition of this camera is highly dependent on the cost of the SR-R1 recorder. I find it interesting that no one discusses this. If it costs too much for 4:4:4 hdcam sr, then a lot of people will wait for the epic-s, the cinedeck extreme is 10 grand on top of the 3 grand firmware update, thus the f3 is a 26,000 to start and around 35,000 with accessories. I do not think the 5k epic-s will be that expensive fully accessorized.

i'm working as an intern on dutch film sets
and i also had my first shoot with the f3 this weekend, the images that came out of it where beautiful (and not even S-lock yet) but i was talking about it with the ac's, it just isn't quite a camera like a alexa. we also had some trouble with fitting remote follow focusses. and the hd-sdi didn't work so we had to go to the sd-sdi and some more things like that. problems that hopefully are going to be fixed in the future !
because i really like the idea that is set for this camera
