I've been enrolled in illustration at Sheridan College for the the last 4 years and this is my final thesis project. I have always thought of Carl Sagan's writings as "scientific poetry" since they lack the cold touch that science is often cursed for having. I think Sagan's words resonate more than ever, and will continue with each generation until the human species "wakes up". The first time I heard this excerpt from his book "Pale Blue Dot" it literally changed my life, and I hope it does for you too. Enjoy.

Written and Narrated: Carl Sagan
Music: Hans Zimmer "You're So Cool"
Art and Animation: Adam Winnik

.......first heard Hans Zimmer's "You're So Cool" in the 1973 movie, "Badlands." what True Romance was paying an homage to. that music will forever be linked to those films...............
  • Christopher King pro 10 months ago
Yes! and with Spacek's similar voice over and a subtler version of the music as i recall. A classic.
  • jacob flores 10 months ago
True! "True Romance" was definitely an homage to "Badlands." But, this song is an homage to "Gassenhauer" written by Carl Orff, which was what was used in Terrence Malick's "Badlands."

Jacob, you just made my day. I've been a huge fan of Carmina Burana since i was a kid (the whole thing, not just the over used O Fortuna) and i had no idea this lovely piece came from him as well. Going to look for this and more of his work.
  • Christopher King pro 10 months ago
@Jacob, the plot thickens. Carl Orff based his Gassenbauer on Hans Neusiedler (1536), a German lutenist. The resemblance didn't strike me over the head but the Carl Orff CD Musica Poetica references it.

Great animation! nice...Astronomy can be humbling, but it can also result in arrogance (In contrary to Sagan's words) I've met more than a few of the latter. ...but then knowledge does that to wo(men). The solution...is to terminate one's own PRIDE. For pride leads to arrogance, hate, love (It's blind isn't it?), greed, etc... the alternative is TO BE (nothing). But even that term has been co-opted by modern day gurus / self-help movement. In mythology, pride was Lucifer's fall. But, many modern day astronomers / scientists with their fancy degrees don't pay heed to mythology / old stories. As blind as those who do, but neglect science/explanations. We'll learn soon enough...2012+

Awesome, until right up to the point where the producer added his own self righteous words, "Wake Up World." Next time just kick ole Carl right square in the balls. It would be less insulting. Edit out your comment at the end and let the film stand on it's own. Let it be about Carl and not you.
  •
  • M. Mitchell 10 months ago
Just wonderful. Sharing this with my students. I didn't find the close cheapened the project as Mr. Rizzo suggests. But he might have a point. Allowing the fade from Carl's words might have been more powerful. Still, a terrific piece of work.

I think the greatest culmination of the space program would be a mandate that everyone experience at least one venture out beyond the moon where the vastness of space dwarfs our tiny planet. If everyone on the Earth could witness that, perhaps attitudes would change and peace would, at last, be the norm.

Ugh. Not digging the background music the artist chose to use. That song gets played in the background of ev-er-y-thing. Made it harder to watch. Also, there were times when that (horrid-)music overpowered Carl's voice. The whole thing was annoying because it could've been SO much better.. without that music.
  •
  • joe smith 9 months ago
Totally agree with you McSneaky. The music was lighthearted and didn't capture the true weight of Sagan's words. This isn't a video of kittens playing outside, but an illustration of the human experience in the context of the entire universe we inhabit. It is an otherwise technically challenging and nice piece of animation.

Just out of curiosity, why do you so freely use Carl Sagan's and Hans Zimmer's work and not allow this video to be so easily shared? ie "Sorry, not available for download."???

Thanks for sharing! I don't think anyone has done a bad tribute to Dr. Sagen yet. Your animation just kills it.

Have you seen the one that's built from films? Here it is if you've got six minutes:

You even did an excellent job animating some of the same shots they found.
