Down To The Letter - Danny Echo

We were really fortunate to come across Scott Agar sketching our artists at a show one night in a downtown Vancouver BC club. Since meeting him he has done a number of sketches for a few of our bands and is now doing video work for us. Here is the first completed video for the Danny Echo single from their new CD Rock Bottoms Up called; 'Down To The Letter'.

I asked the artists about the process of making the film.

Here is a breakdown of the technical aspect.

- Starts with initial concepts and storyboards, which we then reworked
- Layouts of scenes
- Rough animation, shot, reworked timing, and cleaned
- Animation is scanned, painted and reworked timing
- BG's painted and placed with animation for initial compositions
- Effects and live action added, first scene rendered
- First scene reworked and re-rendered 
- Other scenes completed and reworked and re-rendered
- Scene transitions and credits added
- Compositing reworked and finalized 

Thats it for the technical process as to how we made the video. As to how I ended up with the  final imagery. I basically approach the scene like I would an oil painting. Every frame needs to stand on its own feet and work as its own composition. I use a combination of blends, screens, overlays, and held images to accomplish this goal. To remove stiffness, create depth and a sense of atmosphere I added a series of push ins and outs along with rotations and blurs in a 3D space. In some scenes I pushed this to give them a slight "Vertigo" effect. Mixing of traditional and digital painting, as well as traditional inking, to result in a impressionistic neo abstract expressionism style.

This is my part of the production.

As you know, Scott and I each took half portion of the music video and we mostly work on our pieces separately, then we gathered our work later on.

My work is done in two different ways.

First way would be the parts where I draw on paper and scan the images so I could play around with color and texture using Photoshop.

Then, I imported those images to After Effect to create motion(animation).

The second way I used is to draw frame by frame on Flash.
