New Toy! The Flip Mino HD: same size as the regular Mino, only it shoots an hour of full 720p HD. I took it out for some side-by-side shooting, setting it against its natural competitor: Kodak's Zi6.

See! Tripod-mounted outdoor footage! See! Dashboard cam footage! See! Walking footage! See! Indoor footage of the production of hot, crispy toasted bagels! Can you STAND it?!?

Do keep in mind that this video doesn't show the differences between the two cameras as dramatically as the original footage. The camera footage was first scrunched down from 2 gigs to 500 megabytes to make it reasonable for upload, and then Vimeo processed it some more. For a clearer demonstration, download the 500 meg Quicktime or visit my site at ihnatko.com/ to see full-sized still frames, side by side, fresh from the original MP4's.

  • Great vid. I'm glad these Mino HD/Zi6 comparison videos are making it on to Vimeo. I notice your dash mount looked pretty sturdy. Can you recommend a good, inexpensive dash mount for a light-weight camera like the Zi6 or Mino HD?

Easy: Joby's GorillaPod. That's what I use for all of my dashboard videos. I slam the door on one of the three legs (thus locking it in place) and splay the other two to stabilize the camera. Works a treat.
  • Awesome recommendation. I had never seen anything like the Gorillapod before today. It's so versatile. I just ordered one from Joby.

So let me get this straight, you actually slam it between your car and your car door? Doesn't that break stuff?

Be sure to check out the RCA EZ300HD, I think it beats both. Plenty to view in my videos.

Mino looks so much better, but I do agree that the audio is louder with the Zi6.
  • Rachel Fridkin 1 year ago
really? i thought the colors came through much better on the kodak than the mino
  • dalas verdugo staff 1 year ago
I agree with Ellerbestyle. It's better to have flat colors that you can boost later in post if you want to. And it's a shame the audio isn't better on the Mino.

    Thanks for posting this!

During the first two clips, I thought the Kodak blew away the Mino's audio... but then the shots in Panera and the car, it made me realize that the Mino is definitely better suited for indoor/outdoor up close dialogue. You can turn up the Mino's volume in post, but you can't easily compensate for the distortion and background noise from the Zi6.

im loving the producers at the beginning LOL - but i really appreciate you putting this up, i've had the hardest time trying to decide which one to get, because i dont have the luxury of owning both lol but i think ill have to go to your site and delve deeper into the research.

Echoing the comments above, thanks for posting this comparison. I'm a bit disappointed in the audio level from the Mino, but am impressed with the picture quality. I'll stick with my Lumix TZ5 for now.

    great refiew and great muzik!
also I waz laffing vhen za radio nues did speak of za gofener of kalivornia, so ironic

    but seriously a great review
I wish the Mino had sound somewhere between the two of them, a bit more depth and volume without being as bassy as the Kodak. Mino's video wins hands down.
(vimeo need to allow 30fps for HD duh...)

Had a look at the RCA EZ300HD but wasn't impressed with the colors.
As to date no-one has had the vorsikt to provide external A/V input for recording external sources, SD or HD.
(now zat vood make my pretzles pringle!)

Mino HD seems to have film color out of the box

Great Review! Thanks for this. I'm still undecided though. How do I view the 500 MB quicktime that you mentioned?
  • Fred Oliveira 1 year ago
You'll find it on the right sidebar for this video.

Is it just clicking the HD on link? I thought it meant that I could download the actual quicktime file. I don't see anywhere to do that though.

Ahhhh.. I'm an idiot. I see the link now. :-P

In my opinion it appears the the Mino does much better indoors- but, I do like the (rather over saturated) color of the Kodak for outdoors. But, the Mino wins for overall ease of use, design, and simplicity (I love my Flip Ultra).

Wow! Really well done. Based on the video demo, I can defiantly see that the Mino HD performs much better in providing natural life like colors, but the Zi6 washes everything out a bit. The Zi6 did seem to have a better mic though.
  •
  • mvmorten 1 year ago
To me the Zi6 picks up to much ambient noise.
  •
  • Steve 1 year ago
Well done - but I wouldn't make a final decision based on this video. Lots of other videos posted on Vimeo from the Zi6 show it performing much better.

Hey, I used to eat at the Miss Cranston diner!
I'm interested in the audio issue. Initially, I thought the Zi6 did better, but as I listened more, I changed my mind. The Zi6 seems to have more bass, but the overall impression I get is that it is simply a bit louder, picks up more low-frequency noise, and is muddier. Is that your impression too? Leaning toward the Mino...

I can't decide if I like the quieter audio of the Mino better or the louder Zi6. I want one, I just can't decide which.

Thanks for a great Job. I am not sure if I should wait for later version / price drop after the holidays.

Very helpful and funny. Keep up the good work.

Looking carefully in the distance, the Kodak has better resolution of detail.
But the Mino seems like has truer colors and more natural audio. The VU meter needle would be pegged if the Kodak had one.

I'm often far from a computer and would be out of luck when needing to recharge batteries or clear out the memory every 2 hours with the Mino.

Besides, I love Kodak using AA's because they load into the RayOVac 15 minute IC3 chemistry recharger.

(Didn't read any of the comments above, so if I repeat not liable)
Great comparison thank you! 3 Minutes into the video I was regretting my purchase of the MinoHD. By the end I was happy with my decision.
Things to take away from this video:
Kodak looks like it has better color saturation.
Flip is all-around better in low light.
Kodak seems to have "richer / deeper" audio.
Flip has less audio noise, esp. wind noise.
You have to be very stable when you walk-and-film with either camera.

if you have a mac and are editing with imovie, there's an amazing plugin called gee three slick stabilizer. if you shoot as smoothly as possible(even with the shakes), just apply the stabilizer and you will get amazing results. check it out. there are samples.........http://www.geethree.com/slick/index.html

I have a mino hd that I got for xmas and then got a vado for a good price on Amazon.com which I haven't opened. After watching this I may dump the mino on cragslist and keep the vado. Great comparisons! BTW are you in Cranston? I recognized some of the video!

Well done man, thank you for posting this. While I generally loathe consumer cameras, I've started to embrace them more and more for international travel-stuff that is going to end up on the web. I shoot video for LonelyPlanet.tv sometimes and I'm looking to take one of these cameras on my next trip as well as a small, traditional 3ccd camcorder. I think you convinced me to go with the Kodak camera. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

    Thanks Andy - Great comparison!
Knocking over items in coffee shops, scaring the elderly, singing Nazi musicals & riling up suspicious short order cooks! Don't mind him! He always wanders around our hamlet with his twin video cameras!
