1. Oil'd
In April 2010 a massive oil spill began in the Gulf. The entire country was glued to the news until the well was capped, and then we forgot about it.

As the year anniversary was approaching I became curious, just how much oil was that exactly? Where would it have gone? What I found was shocking.

So in an effort to further our discussion on oil dependency I created this short animation to help illustrate just how dependent we truly are on oil.

I posted some sources at the top. Here is an example of some of my calculations. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the U.S. uses 18,771,000 barrels/day. There are 42 Gallons in a barrel. Which comes out to 788,382,000 gallons a day in the U.S. alone. Divide that by the est 205 million spilled in the Gulf and you're between 6 and 7 hours

    Hi Chris,
You forgot to mention the vast amount of food created with the oil.
Each 1KJ of food requires up to 10KJ of oil. From the fertiliser used, to the tractors, electricity for the processing, the refrigerated trucks, warehousing, packaging, distribution, storage at a supermarket, people driving it home, keeping it in the fridge, using it and throwing away the plastic (which then takes many many thousands of times longer to break down than the actual food).

There are plenty of alternatives to oil use. All of which are supressed by the oil companies, shareholders, govenments, and others who are NOT interested in the use of hydrogen or sunlight as energy sources.

    Nice presentation, very informative.

But I would like to point out the fact that there's only so much gravitational force to hold gasses in the atmosphere. The total cubic volume of the atmosphere has remained the same.
The atmosphere is not going to suddenly going to have the space to hold that "1.6 million tons."

Great message, definitely. The question of "What would we have done with all that oil is a bit misleading. It would have probably taken years to pump and refine the amount of that leaked into the gulf. It just doesn't come out that fast. So it may trick you into believing that the problem in consuming oil is that we may run out. We wont run out, we just cant pump it and refine it fast enough to match our demand.
