This video is made with the help of a collection of failing hard drive sounds, while the video is a combination of failed pdf screengrap videos (by me).
It is the first time I made a (kind of) music video-thing all on my own. for the music I didnt use any composing software except for firefox ...
It is very lo-fi in a broken hifi way -if you get what I mean.

The images are beautiful, and I like the sound also. Sometimes when you are not an expert (I've read on your blog that you don't know much about music software) you get really interesting things, maybe by chance or maybe just because your views are different when you don't master something.

I wanted to make a video of the biggest pdf I have, it is 1000 pages and very heavy and when I scroll through it very fast, the letters disappear and you only see black and white abstract forms. So I used a screen video software and filmed what I saw, but when I finished this and I opened the 2 films I made, something else really weird happened. They both were, instead of black and white, coloured; the black and white forms changed into very slow moving colored blocks.. A real magical and unexplainable glitch. (but, my pc does this kind of things sometimes, he has a will of its own)
When I found the website of the failing harddrive sounds I decided to make some music for the pdfs, but as I wrote down I am not a composer, and I dont know music composing software, I just opened up the samples in a lot of firefox windows and used this to turn them on and of...
And then I loaded the pdfs in my vj program, made a live video form them, just inverting the colours and keying some other colors away and letting them move a bit faster and slower (the normal, not really intervening stuff) and used that as a live film for the music - so that is not edited.
That is the complete process for you mr Philips.
  • wow this is a very interesting process - thanks for sharing!

I really love this video - I think that the fact that you're not an expert makes it better - it reminds me of that moment of fear when things have failed and you are suddenly faced with the terror of a blank canvas (hard drive)!

  • Rosa Menkman plus 2 years ago
Hey, i use modul8 to vj, so thats what i used to put the layers on top of eachother.

but eveything i did witht the video can definately be done with any vj software around.. its only keying and moving the pace.
