Shot in central South Dakota in late march-early april. It was the first time I've had the chance to use, an Orion head mounted on the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero dolly. dynamicperception.com

The Orion (aka Merlin or Celestron) telescope head allows for an ultra slow pan and tilt of the camera while it moves slowly along the dolly. The MX2 controller from Dynamic Perception runs the dolly as well as the Orion head.

I also used a "milapse" mount on a few shots as well. The Orion works great with the MX2 and the dolly, I'll be using it often.

Meteor flash at :53 wide shot, see close up pic below

At 2:09 you can see the Orion panning and tilting on the dolly.

Canon 60D and 550D
Tokina 11-16
Sigma 20mm F1.8
Tamron 17-50

Shot in RAW format, most shots were 25 seconds exposure F2.8 or 1.8 on the Sigma with 2 second interval between shots, for about 300 frames or so (several hours). There were a few 30 second exposures. ISO 1600

I'm really liking these shots done with the Orion head on your rig. Might have to get one soon. Nice shots man.
  • Randy Halverson plus 10 months ago
It would be great on a 12 foot rail. Thanks!
  • Andrew Walker plus 10 months ago
Yeah, 12' would be nice but boy would that be a pain to move around. Hopefully the new system Jay and co is working on will be out soon. A collapsible track would be awesome.

nice! that latest firmware really slowed down the pulse mode.

and the screen direction. it's great to see you have an understanding of camera moves and editing. that plus your overall tone makes for a really solid moco timelapse piece. congrats.
  • Randy Halverson plus 10 months ago
I shot all of this in interleaved, but it did slow down pulse mode too, thanks.
  • Richard Gluck plus 10 months ago
no way!! i misunderstood. currently installing the new firmware. is it that much slower? as in, are you still around (.01 - .02). will be testing tonight. :)
  • Andrew Walker plus 10 months ago
I've only used interleave once. Pulse produces some nice smooth effects for me. But maybe I should give interleave another chance.
  •
  • Randy Halverson plus 10 months ago
I had it on .01 for the Orion, it would move about 20 degrees an hour. I was originally trying to shoot pulse, but decided interleaved worked better on steep slopes for the dolly.
  • Daniel Dragon Films plus 10 months ago
I have the Orion head but I have not installed the new firmware on the MX2 yet, and I have also not used the Orion with the stage zero dolly. I find that on long exposures, I'm doing something weird with my camera delay setting, it fires the shutter and moves during my long exposure.. instead, I've been using an external intervalometer with the MX2 on the dolly at night.

Please feel free to chime in on the new firmware or anything related to the MX2/Orion.
  • MILapse 10 months ago
Daniel the MX2 sequence of events goes like this:
    1.focus tap time
    2.exposure time
    3.exposure delay
    4.repeat
So if you want to do interleaved with a 10 sec exposure on cam you could set it up like this:
1.Focus tap: 1000ms (think of this as the buffer time before the trigger)
    2.Exposure time: 100ms
3.Exposure delay: 11000 ms (think of this as the time to wait before the motor move)

I really like you showing your work with the Merlin and DPS0... have been patiently awaiting the arrival of my DP but been using the Merlin for about a year now with papywizard for time lapse. Can't wait to put the two together and have been real excited to see and hear what others are experiencing (not much out there except results... says a lot of good IMHO). BTW... love your shoot locations! Great job.

  • Fantastic work!
If I may ask, how do you avoid camera shake?
I have a 60d and the shutter itself causes camera shake during timelapses... it seems to slightly shake the cam everytime it takes a pic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  • Randy Halverson plus 6 months ago
I haven't noticed any with mine, but only use wide angle (Tokina 11-16, up to the Sigma 20mm) for timelapse.
  •
  • Thanks Randy, much appreciated. Wide angle lens' must be key in a steady timelapse. It seems that the shutter on my cam opens hard, and slightly alters the position of some shots during a long sequence of images. I will try again!

  • davidevent 6 months ago
    that was a great movie!
    thank you randy!

if you dont mind that i ask ?
in order to use the " Orion telescope " do i MUST use also the MX2 controler ?

if the answer is yes ?
how much dificoult is it to instal and use the MX2 controler with the Orion telescope ?

    thank you
  • Randy Halverson plus 6 months ago
Without the MX2 it was too fast for night timelapse. So you do need it. It wasn't hard, but lately I have been having issues with it. So I haven't been using it. They are coming out with a new controller board that will improve on that.

    I love your art
  •
  • is fantastic .... took a few months trying to get to these movements with my team which is equal to yours: MXO, dolly, Orion head, canon 600D ... I am unable to get fluid movements combined dolly-scope-intervals.
For example that you used in the 2:09 combination you mention?
    I'd appreciate your help
    regards
  • Randy Halverson plus 5 months ago
I haven't been using my head lately because I'm having issues with it. But I believe I had it set to the slowest speed right and up there. I was also shooting interleaved, on pulse it would move to fast. Thanks!

This is some of the best time lapse footage I have scene. Great work. What are you using for your light source in this opening shot? I also noticed it in the Tempest Milky Way video....on the corn and the old house. Thanks, DJ
  • Randy Halverson plus 4 months ago
Thanks! On this video it is a single led light. On Tempest it is a Coleman Quad led lantern.

Very nice again... Don't you get any excessive noise from the iso 1600? I feel that when I use 1600 on my T3i it's just too high, especially with exposures longer than 15 seconds.
