Forks (Part 1)

A Mandelbrot deepzoom to a magnification of nearly a googol, in an area with "tuning fork" shapes.

A longer version will be forthcoming when more frames are computed.

The last frame has a side length of about 1.4x10^-90. That makes this zoom video span a range of scales considerably larger than that spanned by the observable universe from its 41-billion-lightyear radius down to the Planck scale.

A single assignment of colors to iteration values is used consistently for every single frame.

A keyframe interpolation technique was used to render this 4340-frame video in "merely" several months instead of a decade or so; 420 keyframes were rendered and the 4340 final frames generated from them in a few hours by a new, more sophisticated custom Lisp program that allows varying speeds and rotation. (Clojure is cool that way.)

Any frame centered on the keyframes' center and within the magnification range spanned by the "ladder" of keyframes can be synthesized, at resolutions up to somewhat larger than the keyframes themselves, with sharp and very high quality antialias in the center but (for larger frame sizes) less sharp peripheral regions.

This new feature was exploited to make the dive speed up in the repetitive regions and slow down for the minibrots and other new structures coming into view, even backing up a short way at one point, making this video shorter than but better paced than Anaphase, which used the older interpolator. (Simpler language: if Anaphase was 2001, this is 2010. :))

The final few key frames, up close to a very tiny minibrot, at a zoom of nearly a googol, and with tens of thousands of iterations in the *shallows* rising to millions in the dendrites, took one to two weeks *each*.

The zoom continues, generating more key frames for a longer version of this video; with the minibrot out of the picture the newer keyframes are each taking "merely" a couple of days to generate.

The render machine is a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel E5200.
