Shot this Haka performance on a recent jaunt to NZ with O'Neill for the 24 minute show and I thought I'd put it up here in its entirety. Scary fellas.

Hi Dan, there's more Maori culture to be found in the film I made for O'Neill whilst in NZ: vimeo.com/23075562

Sweet! :-) Was it all in one take, or did they have to perform the same thing many times?
  • Ben Hall plus 5 months ago
We shot it twice with two cameras... difficult to replicate the same moves with the same intensity more than twice apparently. They all had pretty sore chests after filming... lot of slapping going on!
  • Marius Loland pro 5 months ago
He, he. That`s what I was thinking! :-) Guess they were pretty beaten after TWO such intense sessions.

Must have been difficult to ask them multiple takes on this... How many takes?
  • Ben Hall plus 5 months ago
2 takes, 2 cameras... As I said before they get a little sore and tired after more than 2.

Thank you so much! I respect and appreciate much these rites and it is rare to see them documented like this. There is something missing though... The words. What are they saying?
Could you please, please, please help us out?
  • Ben Hall plus 5 months ago
Sorry, I have no idea what they are saying. I do know that this specifically relates to the tribe and their culture / dialect. I was told that the dance communicates more than the chant... its a dance that welcomes new arrivals but also warns them to not mess around with them as they are a strong tribe.

Haka were performed historically for a variety of reasons- Haka are performed for various reasons: for amusement, as a hearty welcome to distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements or occasions (McLean 1996:46–47) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka) This looks like a haka which would have been performed by some or all of the warriors of an iwi or hapu to ascertain whether visitors had good or bad intentions and to let them know that the tribe were on their guard! Great video by the way.
