Just recently had a chance to take some footage from the HG20. Sadly didn't really have anything with me to mount it securely to grab some really clean footage. Besides the camera being pointed everywhere, it did a good job, no?

It handles the blacks really well! I'm pressed. Did you do any CC on this? What's the song playing?

No color correction or anything, just a straight pull from the hg20 through iMovie. The first song is M.I.A - Paper Planes, the next I'd have to find out honestly.

Yeah, that looks fantastic! I am soooo ready to upgrade my HV20. It's been a good first HD camcorder, but I'm ready to move on! lol.

So I'm looking to buy an HD camcorder. I've been looking at the HF100 the past week, and liked almost everything about it. But one of the things I didn't like was the black levels (or lack thereof) based on the test videos I've seen on Vimeo, even though I've heard so many good things about the HF100's picture quality. And now I look at a video like this featuring the HG20 and I don't know what to think. Is the HG20's picture quality just better? Are the HF100 users doing something wrong? Where should I go now?

Sorry I really don't know much of the HF100, but the black levels on this camera surprised me. I never had a chance to work with the HF100 sorry Jon :( All I can say is find someone with an HG20 or buy it local then try it out see if it fits your needs. If not return it.

Actually, there isn't anywhere close to me to buy it local from. That's why I've really been reliant on what people are posting on here and other forums.

What confuses me the most is that at camcorderinfo.com, the HG20 is actually ranked worse than the HF100 in terms of low light performance. Now, obviously one has to assume that the reviews are subjective at times. But overall they said "the Canon HF100 is a strong camcorder to have in low light shooting."

I guess I don't know what to think anymore.

On vimeo.com/2326409 you can see the difference between HF100 (left) at 17Mbit/s and HG20 (right) at 24Mbit/s. Can do some more multi cam experiments...

so i've been thinking of getting the hg20 because of its 60g storage. other than that what are the major pros and cons of the camera?

I liked the HG20's feel, and how the menus were put compared to my hv30. Only real downside is the 60gb hd, you get about 5 1/2 hours of video in max setting but for me backing it up on the go was a problem since I have no laptop. Though there is the 32gb SDHC I could use and keep switching those out. The battery is just like every other camcorder since you get about 90-110 minutes of recording time on the standard battery. I really liked how easy everything was to backup. To have it hooked up to the pc you have to have the power adapter plugged in to work for reviewing/backing up. The micro hot shoe kind of threw my off. The sound was amazing on it though. I liked being able to put it out of the bag and not worry about condensation. Just know you'll need a powerful computer to work on these files and newer software like sony vegas, premiere, fcp. I have a fairly powerful pc, even trying to play back the files in VLC it struggled but I heard Powerdvd will play it smoothly. Oh it started up pretty fast and able to record but when it came to stopping and trying to record again you'll have to wait 2-5 seconds depends. You're not able to hook up a bullet camera to this camera :( That to me was a major no no because of how much of different types of recording I do. This is just all I took it hope it helps.
