As New York slowly thawed, fellow northeasterner Bence Szasz and I fled to warmer climes for an SIV clinic with David Prentice. SIV stands for Simulation d'Incident en Vol (simulated incidents in flight). The idea is to try to induce the undesirable things that can sneak up on you while flying, and to develop some understanding of how to get out of them.
We had the pleasure of frightening ourselves with the aid of one of the top competition pilots in the world. In this video: asymmetric collapses , deep spins, and the part where my feet fly up in the air was the dreaded full stall. While I don't have footage of the actual landing, the part in the boat is the aftermath of an inadvertent deep water landing after the tow line broke. Highly recommend the course to all pilots.
