Leigh Nunan and I made a talking plush Turret from Portal. It can sense when you're there, when you pick it up, and when you knock it over, and it responds appropriately.

Thanks! You definitely should stop by: we have our open house every Thursday night starting at about 7. You missed our Portal 2 launch party this past week, but it's a good time every week.

  • Jonathan M. Guberman 9 months ago
I'm afraid you can't has, unless you know someone at Valve who'd like to give me permission. Sorry!

This is awesome and I want one so bad. One piece of criticism though... I didn't hear the turret shooting at all, which I think would make this thing so much more hilarious and fun to mess with friends with. But all in all an amazing idea, great job!
  • Jonathan M. Guberman 9 months ago
Not shooting was a decision we made for several reasons. The first is logic: the gun-panels don't open, so having it shoot doesn't really make sense. The second is that if it was shooting all the time, it would become very annoying very quickly.

The good news is it would be very easy to add shooting sounds, so when you make your own you're more than welcome to include them!

    Adorable.

But yeah, sounds weird when there's no shooting at all. It makes them seem actually nice.

Anyone who adds turret sounds should most definitely break down and install one of those remote-controlled airsoft vehicles and have it fire actual projectiles!

One cool thing you could add is the sensing of other turrets. When you face two turrets towards each other they should say "Hey! It's me!" and "Don't shoot!" :D

This is so innovative and fantastic, I really love the plush design a lot. The fact that it's interactive just makes it about a million times cooler. I'm with everyone that says you should make a prototype for Valve, it would seriously sell! Of course, it must be pretty awesome to just have your own special one just to yourself too.
  • Jonathan M. Guberman 9 months ago
Thank you. I have contacted Valve, but I don't expect they're ever going to get back to me.

I don't know if this has been said or not, but you should consider making an Oracle Turret plushie.

If not, that's okay. You still did a great job on it. :)
  • Jonathan M. Guberman 9 months ago
I have no idea what an Oracle Turret is. (I haven't played Portal 2 yet.)
  • Daniel Strickland 9 months ago
Sorry about that. But if you do pick up "Portal 2" (equally great game to "Portal"), you'll know which one it is when you find the "redemption line", and you pick him/her/it up after you hear it say, "I'm different", and it's laser is flashing. Don't worry it won't shoot at you.

However, if you want to know with spoilers to the game, YouTube has some videos of it (it's an Easter Egg within the game).

Either John is rich, or Valve stole his idea:

  • Jonathan M. Guberman 2 months ago
Unfortunately, I've got nothing to do with that. However, I don't really think Valve "stole" anything: the turrets are their IP to do with as they see fit. I would've loved to have been involved, but I don't bear them any ill will for doing it on their own.
