Here's a piece I put together for Kessler Crane's forthcoming promotional DVD.

No new footage here unless you want to see me yacking away. I used footage from "A Beautiful Ending" to supplement my banter.

It's tough to interview yourself. I noticed that I can't seem to finish a sentence without a couple of "and...uhm"s. Most of what I said was off the top of my head which probably explains those awkward fillers :)

Anyway, Kessler is happy with it and that's all that counts.

The usual Canon XHA1 and Letus Ultimate setup. I used a bank of 8 40w fluorescents for the key light and a single compact fluorescent for the hair light and one for a kicker.

Great testimonial. Makes me want one. Damn it. I love the sweeping shots though the grass; very Malick.

I see a lot of potential here. You may have tapped into something, perhaps the first in the PLF Tutorial Series. $:-)

I have that same crane, I don't use way too much, but when I do, it's great! Cool trick with the grass/steadicam look. What do you use to monitor?
  • Steven Dempsey 3 years ago
Mostly I eyeball it on the LCD by tilting it at an angle that's visible for most of the maneuver. If that is not sufficient, I use my 7" Marshall HD monitor.

That's what I do! Someday I'll be able to afford a spiffy monitor! :)

  • Steven thank you so much for your helpful insight on the kessler crane! I've been thinking about adding one to my arsenal of production equipment for a while now and I think your testimonial might have sealed the deal for me.... I'm very serious about the art of film myself and your insight has proved helpful to me. Thank you again!

One of the aspects I love about you Steven, is you share how you do things. You not only take the mystery out of the film process, but really help with expanding one's tool set with telling their story. As I've said to you in the past, you've opened my eyes with using a crane. Thanks! Nice vid!

Thanks again Steven. I'm looking into a crane as well but I want to keep it simple and portable. The 8 or 12' might be the ticket. It really nice the effect a little movement makes in the piece. Too much and it becomes distracting.

I think you gave a very well rounded discussion on the pros of using the Kessler crane. It definitely strengthened my interest in finally buying one sometime soon.

I also thought your lighting you used in your interview was great. I especially liked the inclusion of your editing station in the background. Gives a lot of depth and adds some very simple context to who you actually are.

Thanks for showing this Steven. Fantastic work as usual. :)

  • Yea that sure does give you the edge. One question. What are some good sites to submit stock footage too, in your opinion?

Very beautiful. I will definitely be getting one. I have been contemplating for about a year now, but now I know I need it!!! I will mention your name when buying it too.

This will help so much in adding that extra touch to my shots. The road shot sealed the deal for me. That was truly a shot that just happens when you happen to be shooting. It's those kind of shots that truly make it yours and yours alone. Nice job!

    Thank you very much Steven.

    Beautiful shots.

But may I say that I found it a bit "teasing" that you talk about the crane but we never see it in the video. I want to see you working with it when you talk about working with it. I know that would have been tough to do because you work alone, but still... would have been nice.

Your face looks a bit purple in the interview portion.

Nice crane work, I have the same 8 footer looking to add the bit that makes it 12 feet.

Your great testimonial and review helped me with my decision to get the 12 ft. setup with K-Pod from Kessler.

    thanks man
