Taking your comment at face value, you're absolutely right. It is "just a music video", and that is precisely what upsets me.
Let me backtrack.
By defending the piece on the grounds that it's "just a music video", you're implicitly advocating the notion that one should only aim to satisfy the standard that's been established for a particular form of media (i.e. a commercial should only seek to be a good commercial, a webisode should only seek to be seen as "good" when compared to other webisodes, etc.) However, the author of this piece has clearly rejected that notion, as this work quite apparently strives to be more than "just a music video". This is plainly evidenced by the first minute or so, the section before the track comes in.
Unfortunately, it ultimately does become "just a music video", for the reasons I outlined above (the story ceases to evolve after the music begins). As a viewer I'm intrigued, as the video opens with something very unique and cerebral, and then disappointed, when it devolves into just another music video (though an exceptionally good one by music video standards). Could have been so much better. Anyone else have a dissenting opinion? Gotta be someone. Someone jump in!
You are basically arguing that this “music video” would have been more entertaining if it was a short film. How can you support that?
It depends on whether the audience will find a short more enjoyable than a compound like this one. It is not solely a music video, nor a short itself, it is both, and you are not supposed to dissect it nor adapt it to your standard of entertainment. It is totally unnecessary. It’s like saying “I would like that car to have two wheels, and be a motorcycle”...
You are trying to revolutionize against a composite that was not targeted towards your interests.
