Get the song: blumpy.org/misc/It%20Gets%20Better.mp3

This was a lo-fi experiment I wanted to do. We shot three songs; this was the third take. Reggie usually warms up; the third song is almost always the most creative and otherwise "best".

The next one might be with three HD cameras. Three is enough angles if we want to boil down the idea.

When I first envisioned the editing, I thought it would cut regularly on the beat. When I got into Final Cut and played with that, it felt wrong. It was as if the editing were calling attention to itself. It felt forced. So instead I went for a more organic feel. I was trying to make the editing subtle so that it disappeared.

I really like how the end has me, Zach, and Jonathan in the background. I like that I don't appear until the end - that was not intentional.

    That was REALLY good.

    Which park was this?
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
thanks! I forget the name. if you take the stairway out of the Brooklyn Bridge (in Brooklyn), and make a right, it's a 30-second walk.
  • ryanpederson 1 year ago
gotcha. i've been meaning to catch reggie live - i see him listed all over the city, including at Union Hall, which is close to where i live. must do so soon.

How did you direct this? Was it pre-planned, or on the fly?
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
I had the rough idea in my head. When Reggie pointed to me, I would do something, and everyone would follow me. So, stepping forward twice, then spinning. It was a simple setup.
  • Simple.. But really nice :)

Bravo. Great editing job, even if you did try and hide it. Must have taken some time putting all those clips together.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
it actually didn't take too long. I knew what the ending shot had to be, so I just worked backwards from there. I think this was the first video I've edited like that.

shit will undoubtedly get better. for instance in the future when we're able to do a sort of time travel we will go back in time and show our younger selves this video on this site and we will think that we have evolved into some way out other shit. that's going to be a truly satisfying day. :)

That was a pleasure to watch. Neat song, neat images, neat lo-fi feel. I also like how it really took collective action to make it happen.
  • sherski 1 year ago
I agree with Auxerrois! Cool song, nice, lo-fi feel. Great job--plus it shows how nice and grassy NYC can be, too!

with some of the v5 confusion, I was kind of getting discouraged with learning new buttons and set ups and this video was strangely and happily relieving. like a pillow from your very own bed at a stranger's sleepover party.

I like how its doesn't seem like everyone can be filming him because you guys all have small little cameras, but then it keeps cutting around... and it being in public also kinda adds to the voyeur feel i got.

really cool idea. nicely edited Jacob.

I was thinking it would have been cool to editing between each shot on the beats, but I get what you mean about it feeling wrong. Because you already had the camera movement it didnt need it! Awesome job!

This was really good to watch and made me feel like it's all going to be ok.

A different take on the freeze frame and spin effect from the Matrix etc. More natural.

it is simple and classy. as you watch it you sort of realize what is happening, the concept building in your mind as Reggie builds the song.

it all works together so well. i am usually bored stupid by music videos, man.

it bothered me at first that you could see all the cameramen - like it was calling too much attention to your process and taking away from the performer - but i got over it
  • isaacwayton 1 year ago
I felt the same way at first, thinking about ways to avoid seeing the other cameras, but as the video progressed, it became part of the background and I just got lost in the song and the movement. That's a strong testament to the editing. Nice job, Jakob!
  • LP 11 months ago
hmmm i feel differently, but reggie's performances make everything look good, so i guess i didn't care either by the end of the video. he is absolutely amazing.

  • keith 1 year ago
Neat idea. I'm actually in the process of storyboarding a music video for a friend of mine. For one of the shots I I've been thinking of building a homemade dolly for a 360 or 180 rotation effect around him. I've looked around at some other people's creations and it seems fairly simple to do. I just need a workspace.

Oh man, that was sweet! I'm in an internet cafe, and I accidentally did a big fart while I was watching this, but because I have headphones on I don't know if it was loud enough for everyone else to hear or not. I laughed it off, so hopefully they did too.

What a cool concept! Just taking the still cameras and using them to record and make a video -- has a cool look and feel. Having the other camera operators in the shot adds to the whole emergence of being in a park. Looks very attracting from afar, say if I were in the park jogging. (Not like that would ever be the case, though.)
  •
  • isaacwayton 1 year ago
I think it's a neat concept to work backwards (in regards to the editing) because sometimes you just have to let the editing process take on a mind of its own. It forces you to make cuts that you otherwise wouldn't have thought to do, and in this instance, can really add to the organic feel of the piece. Bravo!

I don't know about doing this with HD cameras, i think the fact that its all shot on everyones point & shoots gives it a different feel...a better feel, i don't know how to explain it with words
