Really interesting to see how everything is put together.. Makes me wish I could do those sorts of things.

You also have a voice that is easy to listen to and would be great for voiceovers.

Thanks, Matthew. I've always liked the idea of doing some voice work in my spare time. It's great fun.

Wow- thank you for showing us how you do your wonderful work, Nick! I don't think people appreciate all the prep work that goes into creating something like this. It was also nice to see how you make musical decisions, and see that sometimes the tools can be a bit frustrating even to a pro. Don't know if you have tried Ableton Live yet, but it might be a bit easier to work with on the fly, from what I've seen of it.

Thanks, Lorie. It's very satisfying showing people how much work goes into my tracks. I think it's easy to underestimate as a listener.

I've tried Ableton Live, and find it works best in the live arena. My attempt at sequencing this many samples in Ableton was a nightmare.

The reason you cannot place other patterns onto rows which accomodate a current one is because those rows are 'locked to content', hence the lock icon, meaning that if you use the paint tool, only it's dedicated pattern will be painted rather than the one you have selected.

Everything's set to locked when you open an old FL Studio project (8 and below I think) in a recent version of the software.

To disable locked rows, right click and untick 'lock to content'. This'll allow you to paint other patterns onto that row alongside other clip events, which'll move you from dedicating rows to individual patterns, and instead to instruments and concepts (For instance, a 'lead drum riff' row could accomodate drum sequences spanning various patterns).

That was brilliant. What I really liked was that even though everyone loves the song there are still bits that you're not happy with, that only you would notice. I'm exactly the same when it comes to films.
Anyway, was really interesting and I hope you do more of them in the future.
    Thanks

Thanks, Christopher. Glad you enjoyed it. It's great fun, and I look forward to making plenty more in future.

I stumbled upon your incredible music 2 days ago and am absolutely thrilled you posted this tutorial.

I have no experience in creating music as a visual artist, but this inspired me to try because of the sheer joy in hearing the arrangements of sounds and rhythms in your work.

Much respect and best of luck in Tibet.

Incredible, so interesting to see the actual work you put in to creating these wonderful songs.

P.S. You did use the "just listen" sample, I think it's right before house beat-y part comes in. Plus, I may be mistaken, but did you use a sample of Peter and Rufio crowing or whatever that bird noise is they do?
  • Nick Bertke plus 9 months ago
Yes, you're right actually... "just listen" made it in after all. But no, I didn't use the crow sound anywhere. Thanks for tuning in.

I agree, this has also inspired me to give this a try--it's incredible to see what detail you go into.

At 3:38, when you say "let's move on" and then you play the chorus, it so EPIC, haha!

I'm really happy you're doing this! It really makes us appreciate your music more. I look forward to seeing more of these! Keep up the great work, Nick!

It's funny to see how you're actually having trouble organizing in FLStudio. One thing I noticed (which was pretty obvious) is that you barely use the vertical size of the playlist window which you probably did for the video but that could be slowing you down and also you locked almost all the playlist tracks and somehow locked their patterns as well. (not sure if those are related because I barely lock my tracks)

I also use a tracker/sequencer called Jeskola Buzz, now that's chaos. XD

    Kind regards. ;)

Great track, and i thought it was made with stuff like abletone live or logic, because of warping you can do there. but whith FL studio i can't even imagine the hell of a job you've done with this sequencer. In my opinion there is lot complete crazy things in FL, maybe you should try another program, so you can produce more cool trax like hook remix)))

anyway massive tune and cool 'how was made" video

Loving the stuff, do you ever use any vst's or are all the sounds literally from the movie? It's all amazing really.

Hey Nick, it's interesting to hear your complaints about FL Studio. Have you checked out Ableton Live (PC) or Apple Logic (Mac)? Both brilliant interfaces that I highly prefer over FL Studio. However software doesn't matter; your music is very inspiring and original. Keep up the good work :)
  • Fugal Music 3 weeks ago
Just noticed you've already switched to Ableton ;)
