I was hired to shoot a 30 second spot for a local Rhode Island television network. This network broadcasts most of the Providence College Friars' basketball games.

The purpose of this commercial was to promote the station's coverage of the college team in a dramatic way with a religious tone.

I shot everything in one day. I walked the PC campus with my Sony EX1 with the Letus Extreme, tripod, my bag of lenses and my home made dolly. I shot for about six hours in clear but very cold conditions. Later that day, I drove five miles to the Dunkin Donuts Center and shot the game footage.

To get the sweet statue shot, I asked a guy on campus with a blower if he would stir up a small tornado full of leaves and he helped me out.

I color graded with Magic Bullet Looks and slowed the 60 fps overcranked footage even more with Twixtor.

The actual spot will be thirty seconds. I posted this four minute piece on my website because I simply had too much footage!

That was an amazing shot one of my favorites! I have known guys that have spent hours in AE just to do a similar kind of Shot.

Really amazing. Question: the file has a 95MB size, which is very small, considering the length of the video and its high quality. How did you achieve this?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
i posted all my setting for web encoding using final cup pro 6 in my faq page on my site. here is the link: tomguilmette.com/wp/faq-section

Beautiful work, Tom. Like Ivan and John asked, how'd you get the file size so low with such good quality?

Also, how do you manage the dolly shots without any help? You keep things in focus, framed well, and pretty consistent dolly movement. Do you SMOOTHCAM' it or something?

How do you bring all that gear around with you? Especially the tripod, the lenses, the dolly and track? That's lot to move for one person, re-setup for each shot, and move to the next place!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
thanks aaron, read my faq page on my site. i spill the beans on my web encode settings. link: tomguilmette.com/wp/faq-section

the dolly shots are carefully set up. i level the track with wood wedge blocks. my dolly wheels and pvc pipe is wiped before every shot to keep them clean. i treat my ex1 memory like film, so i only hit record when i want it to count. so in other words, i preform three or four rehearsals before the actual take. i have never used smoothcam yet on dolly moves.

i use a magliner cart to move the stuff from place to place. it is quite easy on a paved college campus. when i shot "falling water" i hiked all this stuff ten miles up a mountain all by myself.

    As usual, extremely well done.

Can I ask what lenses you are using? I am getting the EX1 soon, and want to "trick it out" with the Letus and some lenses.

    the lenses i use are old beat up nikon manual focus primes. this shoot i mainly used my 50mm f1.4. i also used a 85mm 2.8, a 24mm 2.8, and a 300mm 3.5 tele.

i am tricking out my camera too. my follow focus system and matte box with 4x4 glass filters is arriving early next week!

Bravo! Your best piece yet!! Do you build your MBL presets from scratch or use the provided looks? Oh, and what bitrate is this? 3Mbps, 4Mbps?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
i do all color grading from scratch. i only applied mbl to the steeple shot. everything else was saturated and adjusted with "three point color corrector" filter in final cut.

i should have color corrected the yellow out of the game footage shots. this will be fixed on the final edit for the 30 second spot.

the bit rate is 3mbps. for more info on my web compression settings, read my faq section on my website. link: tomguilmette.com/wp/faq-section

    Awesome!
  •
  • Tom fantastic video! Very cinematic! Was your homemade dolly the track version or just a dolly itself with casters b/c I noticed in the church isle scene it was a pretty wide angled shot moving forward down the isle....
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
track version. all i did for this shot was tilt the camera up so that the track was just out of frame.

Your client must have flipped out when they saw this footage. Other than finding out that there's a "Dunkin Dounts Center" somewhere, I think your work is some of the best stuff here on Vimeo.

A lot of these shots look fake/a composite from still images-- but it makes the film so interesting! It was truly amazing, congratulations on another exquisite work! :) The depth and perspective was nicely chosen.
