“I would like to be that woman that somebody else can say, ‘she is an X number of year survivor’.”
Originally from Belize in Central American, Frances was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer in December 2003. “Completely and utterly” surprised, she seeked help from her sister, who is radiation oncologist at MD Anderson. A runner, roller-blader and scuba diver, Frances discovered dragon boating following her treatment and fell in love with the sport. In fact, she observes that her cancer “has empowered me to try things I had not thought about trying” before. Since then, Frances has joined the Pink Phurree dragon boating team, has completed a half marathon and intends to “showcase women in all stages of survivorship as vibrant, engaged, capable women that can compete with non-survivors and do just as well.” An energetic, positive person, she follows the motto of the Pink Phuree team, which is “to allow the survivor to reclaim her life mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally.”
