Yeah, the expectations were much higher. But 420/8 leaves no space for a miracle )

Thanks anyway for your fast review!

Cinestyle is so incredibly flat. I like ;]

Can't really tell because of the compression, but do you find more noise in the (boosted) shadows of Technicolor CineStyle than you would in any of the flat/superflat styles or all they all pretty much even?

    Also what font is that?
  • Crooked Path Films plus 9 months ago
Pretty noisy, just as much as any other flat profile IMO. I still think it's best to get it close in camera using my Crooked Path Flat 3.0 and apply minor grading in post until these cameras get a better codec.

find shadows getting horrible noise after lut
  • Crooked Path Films plus 9 months ago
Yes, and serious artifacts after adding contrast.

Are you guys using H.264 straight from the camera, or converting to prores or cineform or any other HQ codec before manipulation? Generally, when you crush down with the S-curve/LUT I was thinking it should blacken out a lot of the noise in the shadows.

You didn't mention, but what font is that?
  • Lee Evans plus 9 months ago
their lut does crush down the noise via blackening out the shadows, but that then leave us with no shadow detail at all, which kinda miss's the point of saving it in the flat state. when alls done and dusted i would trust marvels 3.4 far more for anything important.

@Lee: Try my Crooked Path Flat 3.0. Also try CPF3.0 Hilight Helper...is situations when you need it, it will drop your highlights about 1/2 stop. Link at the top.

@Mike: I've tried a conversion to Cineform prior to grading and it doesn't really help compared to just using the MOV in PPcs5 in my opinion. And the font is the same as in my logo...called "Take Out the Garbage."

I'll give them a go thanks. also ive found what was making my fcp crash with the red giant LUT buddy, it needs to be set at (3D 32bit float 128) and set the patten to 3D 32 once youve applied the cinestyle lut in fcp with the LUT buddy you can save it out of the LUT buddy as .alut and reload it for non crashing renders also if you want to use in apple color save as a .mga file LUT
you'll be able to see it in color then (it will not be greyed out) . warning though applying the LUT in color can take a minute or 2 to load so give the beach ball of death some patience !!
    hope this helps

Awesome video. So the Crooked Path style is better overall for image quality, grading etc than the other picture styles? Is it also a good thing to increase the Bitrate if I use the Magic Lantern for better image quality? I'm so sick of the noise of my T2i. Maybe it's because I expose, shoot and grade with TechniColor Cinestyle?
If I want a a pretty good video, I shall expose with like Standard or Neutral? And then shoot with the Crooked Path 3.0 or 3.0 Highlights?

Thanks for a good tutorial and guideline. I just downloaded the 3.0 and replaced Cinestyle and Marvel. I will try it out and see if it will make my shoots better.

Also, what kind should I use in low light? a super flat or a little bit more contrast(not standard) to not get much noise.
  • Crooked Path Films plus 3 months ago
What you want to do is create a picture style to closely match what you want the end graded video to look like. It just needs to be close, not perfect. Use whatever profile you like for this or create your own in Picture Syle Editor. Use that when setting exposure, setting up lights, setting iso, etc etc. Then switch to CPF3.0 before you press record. Then in post, color to your desired look.

In the 8bit colorspace it's not a good idea to shoot very flat (like with Technicolor) because you don't want to push the contrast too far in post because it will degrade the image too much. I designed CPF3.0 to be similar to Neutral with a little more information in the blacks and hi-lights and better color reproduction.

If your T2i is noisy in the shadows...the Technicolor will make it alot worse.

Okey, thanks for an awesome answer. I will definitely do like you said. And yeah, with 8 bit colorspace you can't play around too much like 32bpc. If only the DSLR had what. That would be awesome for us that love color grading. And thanks for awesome videos, tips and website. Keep it up!
