41. F5 2011 RE:PLAY Film Festival. Inductance
9 months ago
“Happy” was the theme we were given by the organizers for this year's F5 Re:Play Fest ( f5fest.com ), held in April in NYC, to create this edition's pieces, probably the hardest thing to convey in any artistic expression. After a good deal of introspection, and teaming up with awesome motion graphics artist Gerardo del Hierro, we decided that happy wasn't happy for Physalia unless pliers, microchips and a bit of soldering were involved, and with this idea we resolved to create the happiest machine Physalia has built to date.

Credits:

Direction: Physalia ( physaliastudio.com ) & Gerardo del Hierro ( grrddh.com )
Music: Fernando Dominguez.

you know it violates physics, right? like, refrigerator magnet either sticks or drops off, and not flying in the air, for a reason )
  • endolith 9 months ago
Not with an active control system. How do you think maglev trains work?
  • mr m 9 months ago
maybe that has something to do with magnets being placed UNDER the train :)
  • Tomislav T. 8 months ago
no, this is possible.. and it looked like they're placing electromagnets in the balls (if it is for real :).. and you can find magnetic levitating toys in online stores or pretty much any gadget store..

Beautifully done, but of course the limited screen time gives it away. Couldn't have been very easy to render a lot of frames for that effect.

    Great work, though.

Good idea..but i have an idea to make it better.

I invented something to make things rise up by inertia..

If it works we can put this inside the balls to make rise

    up without outside magnet..

Its idea till now and i don't know if it works..but we can

    try because it is cheap

The best compliment any of us can usher is that so many professionals can't tell if it's 'fake'.

Everything we do is fake. Fake color, contrast, frame rate (speed), motion graphics, etc. What's the difference?

I loved it. For a moment, I felt the same way i did when I saw my first card trick: thirsty for more.

    INCREDIBLE!

It's really inspiring and exciting to see such creative thinking instead of turning to CGI!
  • Albin Högbom 9 months ago
I think it's CGI tho. Still, pretty genius!
  • Ramsey Hassan 9 months ago
    Really?

I thought they but metal things inside colored balls and turned up and down the power lever on an electromagnet to make them fly out the box and move about like a wave?
  • Gargaj 8 months ago
This looks like too much work to be CGI.

    Obviously not real

a: Ebay seller for 'gigantic elektromagnet' doesn't exist.
b: The guys that made this are a media design company that do a lot of CGI work. Not physics.
c: @ 0.22 the guy has after effects open on his screen
d: The shadows are partially there, but they don't properly work. In fact they are quite basic composites in AE. You need to take more consideration in to your shadows, its the first thing people go for & there isn't enough detail in here to keep me entertained....

Overall, good attempt but swing & a miss
  • Howie Murray 9 months ago
@Craving Arms Perhaps you could direct us to the video you made that is similar but I am guessing way better?.......?? No? oh.... thought not.... 3 seconds worth of cheezy flames.... way to go. You are clearly the expert at CGI and I am sure your critique is highly valued.

@ Physalia Studios - Hey guys... superb short! Perhaps you should post it to YouTube as well to keep that particular crowd off of Vimeo? Just a thought.... ;)

  • Josefine Gustavsson 9 months ago
    I like your thinking!

After having developed a new animation technique where I made use of magnetic fields, I thought it was complete madness to place such a powerful electromagnet close to computers. Then I realized how talented you are at CGI :)

Feel free to have a look at my low-tech animation which is made using iron filings and magnetic fields:

    Hi all!
Thanks for your comments! It's not surprising that you couldn't find anything by Fernando because this is his first published piece! And a pretty succesful one, so we're very happy for him.
But in his daytime life, he's none other than Fernando from genius Dvein, check them out if you haven't (some people were born with all the talent!!) :))):

    dvein.com/

As the reception of the piece has been so awesome, he's thinking about uploading the piece for everyone to download, among other treats :)
    We'll keep you all posted!
    Best,

    - The magnet was still on eBay one day before posting the video

Es increíble, y es obvio (o creo) que habéis hecho la escena donde sale el chico con el ordenador, si os fijáis bien, éste está editando con After effects y se aprecian las pelotas, con el sistema de partículas.

    Aun así, increíble!
    Parece real.
