100 Gallon African Cichlid Aquarium
150 lbs of base coral
50 lbs of crush coral substrate

2x Rena Filstar XP3 Canister filters
Rena 400 Air Pump
2x Marineland Flexible bubble wand - 48"

These pumps are very strong and cycle over 700 gallons of water per hour. This allows me to keep more than 50 fish stocked in the tank.

Shot with HV20 & Raynox HD6600 Pro. Edited in Sony Vegas 8 Pro and Music made in Cinescore

Curious, do you really need to cycle the water that quickly? I didn't think it was such a good idea to cycle it so fast. I forget the reason. Great tank though. Envious.

Depends on your fish, Angels and some other community fish like less current, These guys love it and being stocked on the heavy side its good to move a lot of water.

Technically you could get away with 1 pump, but once you have this many in the tank its good to have 2 and its also a good backup in case your gone for a day or so and 1 pump decides to die. ( this has never happened to me in the 15 years of having the tank) but it is possible.

This current setup has been running for just over 5 years now.

    Thanks for watching :)

I wanted to let you know that your video passed the kid's test over here. They were all watching it and talking about the fishies.
  • Brian Boudreau 3 years ago

Very cool Brian. I love your aquarium set up. Do you always keep it that clean?
  • Brian Boudreau 3 years ago
Ya the pumps do a great job at keeping it clean.. I do a water change every couple of weeks (20-25%) and only have to pull the pumps apart every few months to clean them and were good to go again.

A bigger tank is actually easier to maintain then a smaller one

Fantastic colors. Did you do any grading? What did you use to deinterlace it?
  • Brian Boudreau 3 years ago
No grading on this one.. It's straight out of the HV20. Edited and deinterlaced in Sony Vegas 8

Neat! You're a real renaissance man Brian. Film maker with a little Jacque Cousteau thrown in. Looks very National Geographic.

I'll be right over! Let me grab the fryin' pan & fishin' poll!

Nice man! Don't these guys fight a bit (territorial)? If I remember right Cichlids are a bit feisty.
  • Brian Boudreau 3 years ago
I gave away a few pan size ones not long ago.. Just had to many

yes they are territorial especially when breeding which seems to be 70% of the time in there. If I go away and someone forgets to feed them for more then 1 day I'm cracking out the CSI kit to look for the guilty party :)

Guess we’ll have to start calling you “fish man” I tried an Aquarium many years ago – the results were not good. Looks like you have this one figured out “fish man” :-)

Nice one Brian, and now maybe a video of wild fish up at Duchesnay Falls...?
  • Brian Boudreau 3 years ago
Hmm you know I've never seen fish in there.. I'll have to ask if there would be. I know the lake it runs into has pickerel and a few others

That is all around beautiful. Great video and editing and the tank is spectacular. I've always been a saltwater guy but if I ever do freshwater I'll use your tank as a model :)

This makes me miss my cichlids
  • Brian Boudreau 1 year ago
I've had lots of different types of fish over the years, but I kept missing the cichlids and came back to them about 5 years ago.
