If you're new to the project, you can catch up here hi.projectpedal.com

I guess I should start this post off by answering two questions: 1) "Why did we re-release Episode 8?" And 2) "Do I really have to re-watch this?"

First; Episode 8 was extremely exhausting for Amanda and I to write, record and edit. And by the time we were 2/3rds of the way finished cutting it together, we stepped back and said, "ehh, this is getting long, I think it's good enough the way it is now". And we chopped off the whole ending we had written. What bugged us about doing that after the fact, was that the ending is what tied the whole episode back into the rest of the 64 Days series sixtyfourdays.com

And second; If you're pressed for time, then my honest answer would be, "No.", you don't have to watch the *whole* thing. But if you wanted to see the major change, then you could skip to the last 3 minutes. As for the rest, there are only minor changes... many things taken out, several small things added in.

I believe Amanda and I said this before, when we first posted Episode 8, that we would never be 100% happy with this episode. That there was just too many things that could never be squeezed in - but I think we both try to remind ourselves that 8 was one of our most successful episodes. Not in number of views, but definitely in comments and reaction. People really opened up after watching it, and no matter how many little things we know we had to leave out, I think we still managed to make something people can relate to.

Okay, enough stalling. I hope you like the extended cut of this episode. As always we'd love to hear your comments and questions - but also, if you have a twitter account, we'd really be flattered if you send out a quick twitter about it. Thanks!

that sucked me in again. loved that.

the final shot on the bus is beautiful.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks Ayz :) We were a bit worried it wouldn't be enough of a difference to pull people back in for the updates we put in. So I'm glad to hear it.

And the last shot is all Zadi :)
  • amanda walker 11 months ago
thank you ayz! so glad you sat through it for a second time :) i'm not sure if i would call the ending shot beautiful, awkward is more like it :P but thanks. (now, go show all of your friends :P we need more views!)
  • Ayz Waraich 11 months ago
The awkwardness IS what's beautiful about.

    You guys rock btw.
  • amanda walker 11 months ago
    thank you. sincerely.

the awkwardness is why i can't watch the last shot. but also, why we did it. that's how we meant it. i just hate watching it. i also wish we had used a tighter shot.

this just goes to show, that i never will be %100 satisfied with this video. :P

Touching, poignant, reflective. You guys have an amazing ability of summarizing thoughts and emotions into visual words. This one must have been a little painful in the edit. And I wonder, is the whole process collaborative, right down to scribbling words on paper, and chopping cuts in FCP? I mean, like, who has the final say as far as editing to the truth and vision of the story?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks Zach :) Yes, it was very hard for us to make - took a lot out of us...

Yea, we're both always changing and building on things right up to the last minute. The episode doesn't go up until we're both happy with it :)
  • amanda walker 11 months ago
    right, what mike said ;)

this was painful. and that's the reason it took us 7 months to follow-up. we needed some time off after this one. so emotionally draining.

the whole process is collaborative. we mapped out the episodes together. we both decided what they would talk about, how they would flow, and which shots to use. mike writes (types on an old typewriter) most of the narration then i come in an make changes and re-arrange things. or if he is having trouble, i write. we both wrote part 4. and i wrote the end of this episode. although mike does the actual editing, i'm there, pretty much, the entire time. and we do it together. we both pic music, clips, and everything else. and we pretty much have to agree on everything. he's right, it doesn't go up until we are both happy.

The first really allowed us to immerse ourselves into your sentiments. But I felt like Amanda didn't blossom by that I mean reach her full potential. She comes off much stronger now that the full story has been told. It really feels like an effort by both of you less dominated by one or the other. I really enjoy how things are narrated. I noticed the change in volume of music too. I enjoyed it a lot.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks Nabil :) Yea, as great as I thought Amanda did in the original edit of this, she really, really did a fantastic job of bringing this episode to a close.

And yea, I fixed some of the audio that bugged me so much :P

Thanks for the comment and the support :)
  • amanda walker 11 months ago
nabil, thank you. that was so nice of you to say. it's taken a long time for me to feel comfortable in front of the camera or microphone. and i think writing the ending in my own words also helped. i love mike's writing, but sometimes it's hard when he writes things for me to say, because when i read them, even though it's what happened or how i felt or what i told him, it's just not exactly how i would have said it. anyway, your comment really means a lot to me. i'm so glad that you saw me come off as stronger and that it feels less dominated by one or the other of us. that is so perfect. thanks again.

Hey Mike, what's the name of the track that starts like 38 seconds in. It sounds so much like Coldplay, though I think it isn't. Went to the sites you showed in the credits, but couldn't find the actual song. Lemme know when you get a chance.

I've watched this episode with my girlfriend about 4 times now. It's spectacular.

  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Hey Kyle :) It's a song called 'To Build a Home' by Cinematic Orchestra. It's a beautiful song.

Four times!? That... is very flattering. Thank you. That makes me very happy.
  • amanda walker 11 months ago
yay! i love that song! that was totally my contribution :D heehe! and wow.. 4 times!?!? how flattering is that!? you and your GF rock!

6:27 is my favorite part of this. The subtle "I thought you didn't love me anymore." behind the dialogue was so impacting.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Well then :) I'm very glad Amanda made me keep it in - I almost took it out... Thanks for watching.
  • amanda walker 11 months ago
yes! see, that is what i'm talking about!! as mike had written that part, i thought, this is what i want to say, or how i felt. so i asked him to put that in. but to make it very faint and sort of overlapping like a dream or thought. i was mad that it was so faint in the first edit that you couldn't even hear it. i asked mike to fix it and he just took it out. so i demanded that he put it back in :) yay! for nabil being on my side :P
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Yes, yes :P You were right about that line.

I've watched many of your videos over the last day... you've put together some really powerful stuff here! I already saw your first cut of this episode and I think this re-edit was absolutely worth your time... really well told human drama. The narration on both of your parts is what really brings it home... and in spite of the obvious emotional pain, I doubt strongly that you two will ever regret this exercise.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of your episodes!!

And here's a little something that I just read the other day... it's from a bio on Winston Churchill... very inspirational chap I must say... in fact, so inspirational that I started doing something I've never done in my life... I wrote down a bunch of his quotes... a bit over the top I know, but I think it's been worth my time. Here's one that I think kinda fits your journey:

After his first victory when running for Parliament... "I had what seemed a triumphal progress through the country... and quite a lot of victories followed in my train. I was 26. Was it wonderful that I should have thought I had arrived? But luckily life is not so easy as all that: otherwise we should get to the end too quickly"
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Hey John :) Thanks so much for this comment - and thanks for watching my/our videos. I'm glad people are enjoying and especially finding it worthwhile to watch this extended episode. We had wanted to re-release it almost immediately after putting out the first version... but always kinda' worried no one would watch it :P

It has been a great learning experience though...

I love this quote. I'm gonna have to write this down somewhere where I won't loose it. I think it's very fitting :) Thanks again John!

The last cut f this made me uncomfortable. And I never told either of you. Mostly because I didn't realize why. And then it hit me, and I had forgotten this. During your break up I was having my, sort of, mid life crisis. I was falling apart the same time you both were. And it's hard to say who i was back then. Was I saying the right things? Was I answering Amandas questions one way when I should have said it another way. Should I have backed away. Should I have helped more. I realize now that at the same time you were both going through your pain I was having a break down of my own. I was there more for Amanda cause she was the one that had the bigger broken heart and Im sorry I wasnt there so much for you Mike. I think Amanda going on the trip was probably the best idea. I think Mike working so hard to keep the friendship was another good idea. It's so great to see where your both from, where you went and where you are now. What a roller coaster year 2007 was. I miss you both.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
200 7 was a roller coaster... but it looks like we pulled through okay. Miss you too :)

it's all good, yo. you did all you could. you did all the right stuff. it's just life. there is no right answer. we just try to get by. love you, yo.
