If you're new to the project, you can catch up here hi.projectpedal.com

It's taken Amanda and I a long, long time to put out this episode - and in the last several months since we released 8, the script for 9 has gone through many changes. The last two weeks that we've been working on this has been exciting, I didn't realize how much I miss posting new episodes.

I'm watching the progress bar on Vimeo slowly climb past 8% and it's a little before 1 in the morning as I'm writing this. It's gonna be a long night - but it's worth it.

So - a brief introduction to this episode. This is the 9th episode overall that we've put out, and it's the 4th chapter in the 64 Days series. It introduces in greater detail the three crew members: Olan, Olivier, and Jef. Who all flew out from Belgium to work on Pedal without any pay... at least yet, I hope I'll be able to change that when the film is finished *fingers crossed*

Our time on the road with them taught us both so much. It was an experience I will never forget - and never really know how to properly put into words. Well, enough talk. I hope you enjoy it. Amanda and I worked very hard on it.

If you do enjoy it, as always we'd love to hear your comments and questions - but also, if you have a twitter account, we'd really be flattered if you send out a quick twitter about it.

Here's a link to the PDF of episode 9's script tr.im/1ftz - This was scanned in about two weeks ago, so you'll notices some slight differences in what's typed out and what ended up in the timeline. We tend to make small changes and rearrange the edit up until the last minute.

Thanks for being so patient with us - and thanks for all the support.

Hey hey Loonachic ;) Thanks so much! Yea, the grass is real - I'm not that fancy with the special effects :P

And I believe you were the 1st to comment on the whale :) you win... something... uhm. Yes, that was a whale at the very end - which will be explained in the next episode. Am I a jerk for not explaining it now?

Excellent guys. This was a really fantastic look behind the scenes and really helps us understand more of the context behind Pedal. There is a wonderful intimacy here and it allows us to relate more with the process.

    Wonderful work.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Blake :) Thanks so much. We really love getting comments from the Vimeo staff. We're really looking forward to doing the next episode... there's lots of layers in this episode that we are going to explain...

Thanks for all the support! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

yay! so glad you are understanding things and feeling intimate with us. seriously exactly what we want.

Kudos to you Mike for this amazing work. And thanks go out to Olan, Oliver and Jef. You were fortunate to have formed a great crew. One that was honest and one that were all winners deep inside. And last but not least, Amanda for seeing it through. Nice job....
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey DaVinci :) Thank you very much. Yes, many thanks are in order for the crew - I learned so much from them... it really does blow me away sometimes. And I wouldn't have made it without Amanda for sure.

thanks. we made this together. project pedal has taken many turns and worn many faces along the way. and now i think we have truly come to a place of equality, friendship, and trust. it's been hard. we both deserve medals.

I just found out about this project earlier today. I don't think i can think of a proper way to say how inspiring and incredible all of this is, but i've felt more motivated by this than i've felt in a really long time.
I've spent a whole day trying to catch up to what you guys have uploaded, and am really looking forward to seeing more of this.
This is amazing. Congratulations to all of you.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Frankie :) Yay, we love hearing from new people. Thanks so much for the great comment - it means a lot to us that not only did you enjoy this episode, but that it pulled you in enough to go back and see earlier footage.

    Thank you again :)

yes, what mike said. thank you for wasting your day on us :) i hope you come back for more, we promise not to take so long next time.

The barage of imagery would be almost overwhelming if it weren't for the passion and poignancy of the narration. You have a wonderful way of translating emotion into words and the way all those candid vignettes are put together evokes a sense of intimacy I've rarely encountered in any medium. I have so many good things to say about this entire project but I'll refrain from going further because I'll likely make a mess of my impressions :P

I do however want to conclude by saying: "all of you have done stellar work!"

    keep it up (:
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Mihai :) Thank you - we try very hard to get the narration just write so it all fits together smoothly. Or at least as smoothly as possible ;)

And you comment about "intimacy I've rarely encountered in any medium" really means a lot to me. Thank you for taking the time to write that. It's comments like yours that keep us going.
  • amanda walker 1 year ago
i love it when we seem to accomplish what we were hoping to. i have to say that sometimes this is all hard to believe. i don't think it's really sunk in yet. i'm sort of in denial or disbelief. thank you for taking the time to comment and saying such nice things.

Being Belgian myself, I feel obvious affinity with this episode. As I was watching it, I couldn't stop thinking 'what if I would leave the life I lead' and do a bike hike in the US (or where ever). But that would mean leaving a wife and two young children, which I care too much about. So your film makes me contemplate my life, and what I value in life. I takes a lot of courage and persistence to do what you did, but it also deserves respect to lead an ordinary life and to bring up children.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Ivan :) Yea, I've always been extremely interested in that part of the crew's experience - leaving everything behind and traveling so far to do something so crazy... it's something I've never done.

I'm glad our episodes have you thinking :) and yes, it does take an enormous amount of character to raise a family. Thanks for the comment!
  • amanda walker 1 year ago
yes, we all had the luxury of not having too many responsibilities that couldn't be left for too long. but i do envy you. i would love to have a family of my own to help raise. perhaps you can do both. maybe when the kids are older you can start out small and do a short bike trip, as a family, around Belgium :) how fun would that be?
thanks for watching! thanks for the comment!

What a neat and committed story you guys. I hope my son now 14 almost, does something like this one day. I'm in my early 50's and pursue my muses fervently but something like this journey that says I need this year for that and that only I"ve not done and commend your youth for it. Lovely story and the beauty in the angles on the long road shots is amazing work folks. Best with this.

About the cliffhanger... As you were building up the tension, I was actually expecting something much more dramatic: I thought the biker would be hit by a car and die on the road. Your final revelation then came as some sort of (lucky) anti-climax.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Ha - that's not good. Yea... I think... that would have been a really awful twist to reveal :P
  •
  • thisredbook 1 year ago

Looking forward to more of that whale. :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks RedBook :) But thankfully no, no one was hit or bumped or ran off the road by a car. That would have been terrible.

We had quite the experience. And Amanda and I are *just* now getting into the details of it with these episodes. Hope you keep watching :)

And there will be more whale for sure ;)

This is building up so nicely. I have decided to put all 4 parts of the 64 Days on TheFemGeek.com. It's my way of campaigning new viewers as I get new Twitter followers. I have also talked about Project Pedal in my Doc and Social Change class to give my classmate a sense of what dedication and love for a project can take you and produce. Awesome as always :)
